Number 1 – Sky: Children of the Light

Sky: Children of the Light is a game in which players navigate the large world of the game as a child of light, teaming up with other players to complete missions and explore the different realms. The main aim of the game is to hunt down the numerous different fallen stars and restore them to their rightful place in the sky.

Sky: Children of the Light is a brilliant indie adventure game designed by co-founder of thatgamecompany Jenova Chen. It was both published and developed by Thatgamecompany, and has so far been designed for iOS and Android devices.  Since its initial release on the Apple App Store on the 18th of July 2019 it has gained a 4.8 ranking.

 

Number 2 – Rise of Kingdoms: Lost Crusade

Claimed to be the “world’s first true RTS gameplay”, Rise of Kingdoms: Lost Crusade is a strategy game, in which players can guide their civilisations through an option of 11 historical kingdoms. The game offers real-time battles, and a realistic day and night cycles throughout.

Published by Lilith Games, the Rise of Kingdoms: Lost Crusade was released on the 20th of September 2018, and is available for both Android and iOS. It has a 4.2 rating in the Apple App Store and a 4.4 on the Google Play store.

 

Number 3 – Projection: First Light

Created by the indie developers Shadowplay Studios, Projection: First Light is a puzzle game that follows Greta in her exploration of the shadow puppet realm that surrounds her. Projection: First Light takes its players through a journey of shadow puppet history, and goes through Indonesia, China, Turkey and England.

The game first started to be developed in 2015, and was remade in 2016. The game has received much attention and praise, being in PAX Australia’s 2017 Indie Showcase, and a finalist for both the 2017 Casual Connect Seattle, and the 2016 Play By Play. It is available on Apple Arcade, and as a rating on the Apple App Store of 3.9.

 

Number 4 – Crowd City

Crowd City is a multiplayer game in which users have to go around an urban area searching for others to join them in their journey. The aim of the game is to generate the biggest following (or “Crowd”) on the map. Crowd City was released in early 2018, published by Voodoo, and holds rating of 4.7 on the Apple app store and 4.5 on Google Play. It is available on both Android and iOS devices.

 

Number 5 – Beholder 2

Initially released on the 4th of December 2018, and developed by Warm Lamp Games Beholder 2 is a game where players aim to become the Prime Minister of a totalitarian State. Players start out as a recently employed department officer working for the Ministry of this state. Throughout the game, players have to work their way up in the game to reach the goal of PM.

The game is available on both iOS and Android devices, and has a 4.8 rating in the Apple app store, and a 4.6 rating on Google Play.

 

Number 6 – Flappy Bird

Designed by Dong Nguyen, a Vietnamese video game designer, Flappy Bird was an incredibly popular mobile game initially released on the 24th of May 2013. Published by dotGears, the game was made available on both Android and iOS devices. The aim of the game was to get the “Flappy Bird” between the pipe obstacles without touching them.

Not even a year into the game’s launch, Dong Nguyen decided to remove the game from both the App Store and Google Play. The creator claims this was out of guilt due to the highly addictive nature of the game that had led to its overuse.

Whilst those who had downloaded the app could still play it after it was removed from stores, with the development of the iOS 11, Dong Nguyen said his final goodbye to the game, announcing he was not going to update the app to be compatible with this operating system update.

 

Number 7 – Snake

One of the first and most classic games ever to operate on a mobile phone, Snake is a game in which players must control a snake through the screen of the device, collecting small dots to increase its length. The snake has to manoeuvre around the screen without touching the rest of its body, which becomes increasingly more difficult the longer the snake’s length gets.

The mobile version of Snake was originally developed by Taneli Armanto in 1997, and pre-installed in the Nokia 6110.

 

Number 8 – Angry Birds

Initially released on the 11th of December 2009 and developed by Rovio Entertainment, Angry Birds is a video game in which players have to knock down as many obstacles as they can with a variety of different animated birds. The game became incredibly popular after its launch, and now has a film based off of its characters. Angry Birds was designed by Jaakko Iisalo, and has a 4.7 rating on the Apple App Store and a 4.4 rating on Google Play. The game is available for both iOS and Android devices.

 

Number 9 – Doodle Jump

Developed by Lima Sky and initially released in April 2009, Doodle Jump is a video game in which players have to move a jumping character up to small platforms within a doodled realm. Depending on what map players use (of which there is a variety) different obstacles will present themselves to the jumping character, which they will either have to shoot down, jump on, or avoid.

The game has been incredibly popular since its launch, its developers announcing in 2010 that it had been downloaded over 3.5 million times. Doodle Jump is available on both iOS and Android devices, and has a 4.2 rating on the Apple App Store, and a 4.5 rating on Google Play.

 

Number 10 – Pokémon GO

One of the most popular games of its time, Pokémon GO is a game involving augmented reality, where players use their mobile phones to search for virtual Pokémon in their surrounding area. The game was initially released in July 2016, developed by Niantic.

By September 2016, just a few months after its release, the game was downloaded 500 million times, and broke records as the shortest period of time to make over $500 million in revenue for a game. It is available for both Android and iOS, has an Apple App Store rating of 4 and a 4.2 rating on Google Play.
