Tresorit: Securing Cloud-Based Collaboration with End-to-End Encryption

Tresorit, the Swiss-Hungarian startup is on a mission to help people and organizations work securely while protecting their confidential data. The company was founded ten years ago by three privacy-focused university students who wanted to store and share their files securely. They had the idea of applying the strongest form of encryption, called end-to-end encryption, to keep their data uploaded to the cloud away from prying eyes.

“Raising awareness about the critical importance of data privacy and security has been at the core of what we do from the very beginning” says Istvan Lam, co-founder and CEO of Tresorit. “To us, privacy is a basic human right for every individual and organization” he adds.

Zero-Knowledge of User Files

Tresorit’s main differentiator to mainstream file sync services such as Dropbox is their ultra-secure end-to-end encryption and zero-knowledge technology. This means that Tresorit encrypts the data before it is transferred to the cloud and can never decrypt and access users’ files. Nowadays, this technology is getting more and more traction, especially in messaging apps. When applied in the cloud, it basically provides enterprise-grade security, with the ease of use of consumer services.

While started as a consumer file sync and sharing app, Tresorit quickly entered the B2B segment and is currently used globally by more than 10,000 teams from businesses of all sizes. With remote work rising, organizations are leaning more heavily on cloud-based services for internal collaboration and sharing information with clients and partners. Using Tresorit for that ensures that contents of the files remain in the hands of their owners, making it a safe choice for organizations dealing with critically important data. Most customers are from highly regulated industries, such as financial services, R&D, healthcare and life sciences, or manufacturing.

Secure Yet User-Friendly

Tresorit offers different plans for individual professionals and freelancers, and also to SMBs and custom plans for enterprises. For businesses, Tresorit’s admin features include extensive data control and governance options, to help organizations maximize the security of confidential data. Tresorit also has a standalone file sharing product called Tresorit Send, a secure and encrypted alternative to unreliable file transfer sites and email attachments.

“Our goal is to make our secure tool as user-friendly as possible, and push end-to-end encryption into mainstream thought for both businesses and individuals”, says Istvan Lam. That is why the company is very proud of being recognized last year as a Customers’ Choice in Gartner Peer Insights ‘Voice of the Customer’: Content Collaboration Tools. This distinction is based on direct, verified feedback from end-users. As Lam adds, they are the first end-to-end encrypted service provider to receive this distinction.

Tresorit closed their latest, €11.5M Series B financing in 2018 from a consortium led by 3TS Capital Partners, a leading European growth capital investor. With a compound annual growth rate of 96.4% between 2015 and 2018, they have been included in the Financial Times 1000, the list of Europe’s fastest-growing companies in 2020.
