If you live in areas such as Elstree or Borehamwood, it is likely that you have heard of Amy’s Bakehouse, the local baking sensation.

International media university graduate, Amy Leigh, set up Amy’s Bakehouse during the pandemic, a baking business with bespoke cakes, cupcakes, treat boxes and brookies, a combination of a brownie and a cookie.

“I always had a passion for design and art,” explains Amy, “and I’ve always had a love of baking too.”

“There were limited opportunities for students and graduates in the creative industry during the first covid lockdown – so I started baking and posting my pictures on Instagram to see if anyone was interested – and the orders quickly started to come in.”

“I wanted to create something for everyone, with every order fully customisable and personal and I have also really focused on making excellent vegan cakes and cupcakes and also gluten-free options too. People with allergies may get sidelined, but the taste and quality of these products are as important to my business as any other, and are so popular that people cannot tell the difference between them and products with real milk and gluten.”

“The name Amy’s Bakehouse was inspired by my family home, which has a real personality in itself. It is a pink cottage with a thatched roof and it has all the feelings of a magical gingerbread house where great creations happen.”

“I feel I have learnt so much already from starting my business. I have to thank my loyal customers – some customers have ordered every single week and I thought I was just going to be doing orders for birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions. I was also recently approached by someone to make some personalised brownies for David Beckham – I had no clue that this type of thing would happen!”

“With father’s day coming up, this is one of the busiest times we have had since starting. The extra love and care that goes into making everything personalised, whether it is putting your name on the cake or including specific flavours such as Oreo, Lotus or strawberry jam or including personal features such as cars, footballs, golf clubs or anything that you like.”

“Orders are available for collection from our premises in Elstree and we also deliver up to a 10 mile radius which we will look to expand in the near future. So far I am just enjoying the journey and seeing where it will take me!”
