A Chat with Jón Gunnar Thordarson, CEO at EdTech Company: Mussila

Mussila is an EdTech company that offers creative digital learning solutions for children through a unique Learn, Play, Create methodology. It was founded in Iceland in 2015 by experts in computer science, music and pedagogy.

Our goal is to create digital solutions to improve the learning process and the overall quality of education available to young people worldwide to equip them better for the future. Mussila apps are used by children worldwide at home and in schools.

How did you come up with the idea for the company?

Mussila was created to change the way children learn music theory. Children love music but too many loose interest when they start studying music theory. Mussila gamifies music theory, and has won awards and recognition from all over the world.

Last year we decided to take a step back, celebrate our achievements and think if we could use our learn, play and create methodology for more subjects. This year we launched Mussila Wordplay a reading comprehension app where children learn and increase their vocabulary, the listening skills and the working memory.

How has the company evolved during the pandemic?

The school system was mainly designed and developed for the Industrial Revolution in the 19th Century. At the same time, as the world has been changing rapidly, somehow, education has been left behind. In the last 10-15 years, more and more schools have taken up digital education, and when the pandemic broke out in 2020 and schools started to lockdown, the need for digital education became essential.

Today digital education is no longer a need for schools; it is a must. Therefore schools are being digitised at the moment. When schools are taking on this new technology, it is wise to use it as part of the movement to change the system and reshape the future of education. Education needs to be built for the 21st Century. Mussila can play a huge role in this transition.

What can we hope to see from Mussila in the future?

We can create digital learning solutions in all the core subjects and offer students tools to learn through Play. It took us 5 years to develop the infrastructure of Mussila Music School, it was made for parents around the world. We have also build a classroom solution that is now in use in schools from over 20 countries.

We used our infrastructure to build a reading comprehension app called Mussila WordPlay, it took us half year, because we have the technical structure available. In the future we plan to offer teachers to use our infrastructure from Mussila to build, create and share their own content. They will be able to build their own skill building challenges and share it with the teachers community and their students. This feature will help us to build the teachers community for Mussila to grow and expand around the world.
