Meet Ed Dixon, CEO at IT Startup: Bayezian

Tell us about Bayezian

Bayezian combines academic excellence and industry expertise to inspire early careers to do amazing things with data. This includes machine learning and artificial intelligence to drive competitiveness and data science and statistical analyses that provides the foundation for cutting-edge research, alongside model and application design to make lives easier.

Since being founded in 2020, Bayezian has hired numerous early careers data scientists, training them and finding exciting projects that usually are only open to more experienced professionals. Bayezian has done this by building a reputation of delivering quality outcomes on time. This is not only a testament to the ability for young professionals to perform at an experienced level, but highlights Bayezian’s belief in the ability of young professionals by harnessing their fresh ideas and creativity for good. There are currently 16 staff members in the team, growing to 30 in 2024, with an average age of 25. Excellent hiring, training and ethos remain key to Bayezian’s success story.

This ethos is woven through every project the team completes, valuing autonomy, knowledge sharing, and innovation. This was seen in the spearheading of a data science algorithm, which can determine male fertility at a faster and more accurate rate than previously possible.

Bayezian began the project after being approached by a concerned group to improve the way fertility is diagnosed. The team used the The Modified Human Sperm Morphology Analysis (MHSMA) dataset to build deep learning frameworks that can see a sperm’s morphology. With differences that the human eye can’t see, the Bayezian team has built an algorithm that can determine how healthy a sperm is, and ultimately whether that sperm is fertile. By utilising computer vision techniques, the team has been able to identify sperm fertility with 96% accuracy rate – 2% higher than existing scientific approaches.

What do you think makes this company unique?

Bayezian adopts a Plus One method, a fully supported personal or team project separate to client projects. It allows individuals to expand their skill set and experience while pursuing personal AI research interests. With generative AI being in its infancy, Bayezian’s approach to innovation is essential, rather than relying on ‘X years’ experience in AI’.

Working with data experts, scientists and early careers employees has helped to build and shape the concept. Providing this freedom to explore and experiment has led to groundbreaking discoveries and innovations that contribute to the company’s success and impact. Remarkably, the aforementioned male fertility project started life as a Plus One and led to its impressive findings.
