Martin Ackroyd

Accu supplies a wide range of engineering components such as specialist nuts, bolts, screws and other hardware to over 50% of the world’s top 100 manufacturers.

We care passionately about the small things – taking pride in working with our customers to create life changing advancement. From tiny screws in children’s prosthetic limbs, to precision bolts within fusion reactors that promise unlimited clean energy; our components are delivered across the world to help build a better tomorrow.

How did you come up with the idea for the company?

Our company’s story began in 2011 when myself & Antony (co-founder), who were working for an engineering company at the time, saw an opportunity to streamline the supply chain by building a world class ecommerce platform for engineers.

Inspired by the growth of Amazon and other leading ecommerce websites at the time we had a dream to be the ‘Amazon of Engineering’.

How has the company evolved over the last couple of years?

We’ve experienced strong growth over the last few years. The pandemic has accelerated the move to purchasing online, and whilst many of our competitors slowed down during the pandemic, we saw it as a big opportunity to further grow market share – leading to 50% YOY growth over the past couple of years.

We have also improved the way we listen to our customers so we can provide better products and services. To this end, we’ve invested in both product & company review technology which has led to over 30,000 positive reviews in the past 2 years.

We have an “Excellent” TrustPilot rating and an overall “5 Star” rating on Google. It’s safe to say, we truly are nuts about offering the best experience to all our customers!

Lastly and most importantly, we’ve focused on our people. We’ve created a self-directing workplace that cultivates a culture of inclusion and belonging, whilst allowing everyone to grow. Talent acquisition & retention has become a big focus with the move to a 4 day work week, remote working and implementing various other performance incentives such as Perkbox and a sports & social club, along with the investment of a £250,000 training budget to develop our people even further over the next 3 years.

What can we hope to see from Accu in the future?

2023 will see Accu opening a new warehouse in London, helping us to distribute components more quickly and efficiently in both the north and southern regions, with automated warehousing solutions already in development to improve output of our manufacturing processes.

We’ll then be turning our attention to international expansion, with warehouses and offices opening in the US and Singapore. This footprint will give us 24 hour customer support across the 3 time zones.
