Meet Matt Cresswell, Founder Of Power Of Attorney Online

Power of Attorney Online was born out of a personal experience. When my father was diagnosed with dementia, my family faced the challenge of setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney while he still had the mental capacity to make his own choices. The process was confusing, slow and stressful, at exactly the time we needed clarity and support.

I knew there had to be a better way.

We are a purpose-driven company on a mission to raise awareness of LPAs and make them easier to access for everyone in England and Wales. We believe that setting up an LPA is one of the most important steps you can take in your lifetime to safeguard your future, giving you control over who makes decisions about your finances, health and welfare if you can’t.

Our platform guides you through the process in plain English, helping you avoid costly mistakes and ensuring your wishes are protected. We exist to remove the barriers of complexity, confusion and cost, so more people can plan ahead with confidence.

What Does Power Of Attorney Online Do?

Power of Attorney Online makes it simple, fast and stress-free to create a legally valid Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), without the jargon, paper-chasing or hefty solicitor fees.

We’ve built an intuitive online platform that guides users through the entire process in plain English. Whether it’s setting up a Health & Welfare or Property & Financial Affairs LPA, we help people feel confident and in control of some of life’s most important decisions.

Our mission is to take a process that’s traditionally overwhelming and make it feel human, supportive &, dare we say, empowering. Because life is unpredictable. And when it matters most, you deserve to have your voice heard and your choices respected.

What Spurred You On To Start The Company?

It all started with trying to help my dad. Navigating the Lasting Power of Attorney process for him was confusing, time-consuming and surprisingly stressful. I just kept thinking: “Why is this so hard?” We were dealing with important legal decisions at a really emotional time & the system just wasn’t built for real people like us.

That experience lit a fire. I realised there must be thousands of families in the same position, struggling with a process that should feel empowering, not intimidating. So I built Power of Attorney Online to fix that, make the process clearer, more accessible and fully supportive from start to finish.

What started as a personal frustration became a mission to modernise a broken system. And now we’re helping people across England & Wales take control of their future, with more confidence and less stress.

Have Others In The Industry Been Happy Or Reluctant To Work With You As You Are Disrupting An Established Market?

Disruption always raises a few eyebrows, but that’s not a bad thing.

Some traditional players in the legal and government space have been hesitant, simply because they’re used to things being done a certain way. But more often than not, when people see the clarity and accessibility we bring to the process, they get it.

We’ve had great conversations with legal professionals who recognise that the system needs to evolve and they’re glad to see someone taking the initiative. The key thing has been emphasising we’re not replacing legal advice: we’re improving how everyday people engage with a crucial part of life planning.

Ultimately, we believe there’s room for everyone who shares the goal of empowering the public. And as demand for accessible, trustworthy solutions grows, so does collaboration, especially with partners who want to be part of something better.

How Hard Has It Been To Market Your Services?

Marketing Power of Attorney services isn’t like selling gym gear or yoghurt. It’s emotionally loaded, often tied to ageing, illness or loss of mental capacity. That makes it harder, but also more meaningful.

Our approach is we’re not just raising awareness of our platform. We’re helping people understand why LPAs matter in the first place. Most people don’t realise how crucial they are until it’s too late. So, we’re working to shift that mindset with clarity, empathy and education.

We also try to be human-first, not fear-based. We use plain English, relatable stories and practical reassurance to help people take action, not scare them into it.

Is it challenging? Yes, sometimes. But the reward is hearing from customers who say, “I’ve been putting this off for years, but now I’ve done it and I feel in control.”

That’s when we know the message is working.

What Has Been The Biggest Challenge You Have Faced To Date?

Without a doubt, it’s been building trust in a process that people instinctively find confusing, overwhelming or, even worse, irrelevant until crisis hits.

The concept of a Lasting Power of Attorney can feel dry, legalistic or even scary. Many people don’t realise how essential it is until a loved one loses capacity and it’s too late to act. Our biggest challenge is shifting this from a “do-it-later” admin task to a “do-it-now” life priority.

On the tech side, designing a product that’s user-friendly, especially for older users or people under emotional stress, took time, testing and a lot of listening. But we were determined not to compromise on either.

Ultimately, we’re not just building a product. We’re building clarity, confidence and peace of mind. That’s been a powerful motivator in overcoming every hurdle.

What Are The Specific Considerations When Setting Up an Online Business To Solve an Otherwise Old Fashioned Problem?

You’re not just solving the problem. You’re solving the perception of the problem.

With something like Lasting Power of Attorney, you’re dealing with a process that’s traditionally slow, paper-heavy and full of legal jargon. People expect it to be confusing and many don’t realise there’s a better way. So, the first challenge is building trust and showing that tech can make the experience simpler, not scarier.

We had to design the platform to be incredibly intuitive, especially for users who aren’t digital natives. Clear guidance, accessible language and emotional reassurance were just as important as legal accuracy.

And of course, we’re dealing with sensitive, deeply personal decisions. So, privacy, security and credibility need to be baked into everything. You don’t get second chances with this kind of product, trust is everything, so every detail matters.

You Fall Somewhere in Between Financial and Legal Services. How Do You Navigate That?

We’re not lawyers and we’re not banks, but we understand both worlds. Power of Attorney Online sits at the intersection of legal and financial life planning, which means we have to be exceptionally clear about what we do, but just as clear about what we don’t.

We don’t offer legal advice, but we do offer a legally accurate and compliant route through an otherwise intimidating process. We don’t manage finances, but we help people put the right permissions in place, so their loved ones can when the time comes.

We’ve navigated this space by staying grounded in our mission: to make the LPA process clear, accessible and affordable. That means putting the user experience first, translating complex requirements into everyday language and building technology that genuinely helps people take control of their future.

Are There Any Other Regions You Are Considering?

Absolutely, the need for accessible legal planning isn’t just a UK issue. Right now, we’re focused on helping people in England and Wales navigate the complexities of LPAs, but we’ve built our platform with scalability in mind. Scotland and Northern Ireland are natural next steps, as their systems differ slightly but face many of the same challenges.

Looking further ahead, Australia and Canada are strong candidates for expansion. Both have ageing populations, established legal frameworks for power of attorney and similar frustrations around outdated, paper-based systems. There’s a real opportunity to bring our digital-first, user-friendly approach to those markets.

More broadly, we’re keeping an eye on international regions where life planning is either overly complex or simply not accessible enough. The appetite for modern, intuitive solutions is global and we’re excited to grow into that space when the time is right.

What Does The Next 5 Years Have In Store For Power Of Attorney Online?

We’ve got big plans, because the need is only growing.

Over the next five years, we’re aiming to make Power of Attorney Online the go-to platform for practical, proactive life planning in the UK. That means expanding our reach, deepening partnerships and continuing to push for simplification and reform at a national level.

We’re also looking at growing our platform to support a wider range of life admin tools. Things like digital wills, care planning and end-of-life preferences. All delivered in the same clear, human way our users trust us for.

International expansion is firmly on the horizon too. Australia and Canada are top of the list, with their similar legal systems and growing demand for accessible planning tools.

Ultimately, we want to take the stress out of the “what ifs” in life and make sure that people everywhere feel confident, supported and in control.
