Meet Michael Grant, COO at Smart Building Platform: Metrikus

In short, Metrikus is a tech startup focused on building efficiency, offering a market-leading software platform to make spaces smarter, safer and more sustainable.

We provide revolutionary insights and make data accessible and understandable through real-time data, bespoke charts, graphs and analytics – all available in one place. By driving building efficiency, we help companies minimise costs and emissions to create greener, healthier buildings.

Our headquarters are in London, but the smart solution is in use across the world – and growing fast.

How did you come up with the idea for the company?

I’ve been working with data for over 25 years, and moved into the PropTech space in 2016. Alongside Gary Cottle, our CEO, we launched Metrikus in 2019 with the mission of creating the world’s leading building analytical and integration platform for owner occupiers and facility managers of commercial buildings.

We saw a gap in the commercial real estate market for providing stakeholders with accurate, real-time data to enhance their decision making.

How has the company evolved over the last couple of years?

Although Metrikus is only a few years old, we’ve already developed so much since first being founded. The COVID-19 pandemic hugely impacted our business; the world suddenly had a much greater interest in indoor air quality monitoring, and we needed to communicate this data as clearly as possible.

Overnight, businesses went from trying to cram as many people into a room as possible, to trying to create spaces that were safe, productive and complied with social distancing guidelines.

The needs of our customers are constantly changing and we always try to address their emerging challenges. We’re a company focused on collaboration, and we really encourage client feedback.

For example, our Wellness Kiosk was built in conjunction with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) as they wanted to be able to demonstrate the health of their space to their employees across different office locations.

We really appreciate our customers sharing what they love about Metrikus, but more importantly what they need from us next. This is what’s helped us to develop a platform that’s unlike anything else on the market right now.

What can we hope to see from Metrikus in the future?

We’ve got a few exciting things up our sleeves for the next few years. Our primary aim is to make data as accessible as possible, so we’ll never stop optimising our product – in the not so distant future, our dashboards and insights will be so accessible that our clients won’t ever need to speak to an expert to fully understand what’s going on in their building.

We’re building our platform to be the most insightful one on the market, data-rich with maximum flexibility to allow our clients to set their platform up in minutes and receive tailored insights, like if they need to report in line with certain regulations.

Our new API really drives this concept of personalisation and flexibility; it enables people to build whatever solution they wish and pull this data directly into different platforms.

Thinking about the bigger picture, we’re launching in the US currently which has been really exciting for our team – but honestly, there are no limitations to where we want to be in the future. We’re taking Metrikus worldwide!
