Amazon will now be adding to its Same-Day and Next-Day delivery services by opening up the service to over 4,000 smaller cities, towns and rural areas in the United States by the end of 2025.
The company is investing more than $4 billion to triple the size of its delivery network by 2026, and mainly targeting those places that typically aren’t equipped with a whole variety of delivery options.
Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, said, “Everybody loves fast delivery. So, whether you live in Monmouth, Iowa or in downtown Los Angeles, now you’re going to have the same fantastic Amazon customer experience: the ability to get the wide variety of items you need to keep your household running every day, delivered the same or next day.”
In the first few months of 2025, the number of products delivered on the same or next day in the United States has already increased by more than 30% compared to the same period in 2024. This move builds on Amazon’s 2023 and 2024 record breaking delivery speeds.
Why Is This Useful For Shoppers In These Areas?
Customers in remote areas aren’t always near a physical shop or mall, so they have fewer options when shopping. Amazon is suggesting that faster delivery could improve daily life by saving both time and travel costs, especially to get people’s essentials.
In places where Amazon has already rolled out quicker delivery, more people are ordering more frequently. In fact, more than 90% of the top 50 items reordered for Same-Day Delivery are basic essentials.

What Is Amazon Doing To Speed Things Up?
Amazon is using AI to help predict what items will be popular in each local area. This helps the company stock the right products closer to where people live.
To help with this, Amazon is turning its rural delivery stations into multipurpose hubs. These centres will store popular items and prepare packages for final delivery, shortening the time between order and arrival. This means parcels spend less time on the road and reach customers faster.
New facilities will also mean more work opportunities. Each delivery station is expected to create around 170 jobs. For full-time employees, Amazon says the average hourly wage is nearly three times the federal minimum, and workers are eligible for healthcare from their first day.
What Does This Mean For Amazon’s Grocery Service?
Amazon’s grocery and household essentials category has grown more than twice as fast as all other categories in the United States in the first quarter of 2025. Even when excluding Whole Foods Market and Amazon Fresh, Amazon says it is one of the largest grocers in the country, with gross sales topping 100 billion dollars.
Since people usually need everyday items urgently, Amazon has made many of these available for Same-Day Delivery. This includes things like nappies, pet food, cleaning supplies and snacks. Faster delivery is especially useful when customers run out of something and do not want to wait two days for a replacement.
According to Amazon, feedback has been positive in the more than 1,000 small towns where this service is already live. Customers are using the service more often and buying essentials in larger amounts.
