Creative Nature

Website: https://www.creativenaturesuperfoods.co.uk/

Owner: Julianne Ponan

Creative Nature is one of the only snack brands in the UK where its products are free of the top 14 allergens. The startup is growing and claims it should hit £2m turnover during 2022.

This challenger brand came into being when CEO Julianne Ponan took over a struggling festival gift ware company and re-shaped it into a snack brand for people like her – living with life-threatening food allergies. She was just 22.

At the time, consumers with allergies or intolerances had little choice when it came to food and even less when it came to ‘food on the go’. Julianne has multiple food allergies, including all nuts, and she has anaphylaxis. This means that if she consumes or breathes in an allergen, her ability to breathe is affected very quickly and her airways swell and start to close.

Those snacks which were available were often pretty tasteless and dull, often with much more sugar to introduce some sweetness. Julianne wanted to change that to create nutritious, delicious snacks which were, first and foremost, safe to eat.

Since introducing her first bar, Julianne and her team have brought on stream several flavoured bars, baking mixes and also sweet treats called Gnawbles as well as superfood ingredients which can be used as alternatives and safe additions to meals.

Today Creative Nature’s products are stocked in major supermarkets including Sainsbury’s, Asda, TK Maxx, the Co-op, many independent cafes and also many online retailers offering hampers and products overseas. UK consumers can also buy direct online.

As for Julianne, she’s won multiple awards, crowdfunded twice successfully to grow the business (once after turning down investment from a Dragon on the BBC tv series Dragons’ Den) and today she’s an influencer in her own right as an allergy campaigner as well as being an ambassador for Anaphylaxis UK.

Snack Thyme

Founders: Soraya and Natasha Shamji

Snack Thyme is the brainchild of sisters Soraya and Natasha Shamji, who noticing a gap are launching an exciting new snack line into the UK Market. This is a London based brand on a mission to introduce a line of snacks that are genuinely healthy and nutritious, but above all delicious and utterly satisfying to the palate.

Snack Thyme is a fresh and fun brand that ticks all your snacking boxes. Their launch product is a range of seeded crackers that are low carb, plant based and gluten free. The ingredients are a mixture of highly nutritious seeds including flax, sesame and pumpkin. The range comes in 3 different explosive flavours; Chilli and Lime, Rosemary and Za’atar and an Everything Flavour which uses the popular American bagel seasoning mixture of garlic, onion powder, poppy seeds and black sesame seeds. The snacks come in cleverly designed and easy to carry pouches of 100g. They can be eaten satisfyingly on their own and/or paired with cheeses and dips.

Snack Thyme is a subsidiary of Thyme in the Kitchen, and the crackers have been lovingly created and recipes tested and perfected by Chef Natasha Shamji, a Cordon Bleu trained Chef. These crackers were an impromptu bake that Natasha served at an event, which left guests wanting more and business minded Soraya convinced that they could create something people would love.

Snack Thyme has been selling in local markets and artisanal stores, seasonal festivals and online through their website. They are moving production into a commercial kitchen which will allow them to enter into a wider market and be available to more consumers. The ingredients are organic, whole foods, and sustainably sourced. The packaging is environmentally friendly and the company is committed to being a healthy and responsible business.

Snack Thyme will be officially launching on May 1st/2022. For more information on Snack Thyme have a look at their website www.thymeinthekitchen.co.uk. You can also find them on Instagram @_snackthyme.

Barnana

Barnana-Founder-Cauê-Suplicy

Website: https://barnana.com/

Founder: Cauê Suplicy

Brazilian-born, former professional triathlete, Cauê Suplicy, is the Founder and visionary behind Barnana. His goal of introducing consumers to delicious, better-for-you and better-for-the-planet snacks is being realised as Barnana is now the #1 organic plantain chip brand in the U.S.

During the pandemic, Barnana doubled its sales, introduced innovative new products, acquired its longstanding Latin American supply and manufacturing partner, and assembled a world-class executive leadership team, all with Cauê at the helm.

He is particularly proud that his brand has experienced this growth while strictly maintaining his core value of paying its network of 1,400 smallholder farmers — many of whom are Indigenous to the Amazon — a 30% premium for growing organic bananas and plantains using regenerative farming methods. The impact of this farming income reaches 6,000+ people directly in rural areas of Ecuador, and 3,000+ indirectly.

Barnana was one of the first food brands to use upcycled raw ingredients to make its products and reduce climate-harming food waste. To date, Barnana has upcycled millions of plantains and bananas. Cauê’s passion for upcycling bananas and plantains into delicious snacks helped catalyse the burgeoning upcycled food movement. He is also a founding board member of the Upcycled Food Association.

As the print magazine industry slowed down and digital took off, he decided to chase a new career path that reflected his passion for food.

“I decided, I wanted to create the perfect snack for everyone to enjoy, but it had to be “healthy” and without any harmful ingredients. One snack that would satisfy your sweet tooth, making you “feel no guilt,” said Sayrols.

After spending years developing a line of healthy meringue bites that offer a sweet treat without the guilt we can give thanks to Luis Sayrols and Santte Foods helping you treat your friends and loved ones to guilt-free treats. Tidbits Fun Bites Meringue Cookies are sugar-free, lactose-free, gluten-free, soy-free, cholesterol-free, and non-GMO. Tidbits bite-sized treats that come in a 40-piece resealable bag and come in the following flavours: Strawberry, Cookies and Cream, Cappuccino, Chocolate, Mint Chocolate, Vanilla, Caramel, Cotton Candy and Birthday Cake flavours.

Along with Tidbits Fun Bites Meringue Cookies Sayrols has also launched two other meringue cookie brands: Sinless Sweets and Black Sheep (their private labels).

When describing the process of perfecting these recipes, Sayrols said, “We started testing formulations, we took the batches to friends and family to taste, and from there we made improvements over and over until we got a product we expected everybody to like in terms of taste and texture.”

In just two years of operation, Santté Foods has grown from a team of eight to a team of 42. They currently have 11,000 points of sale, covering the continental U.S., Canada, Europe, Germany, Poland, and Sweden, including retailers HEB, Buc-ee´s, HomeGoods, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Rite Aid, Costco and Publix.

Their products are currently Kosher Certified through Houston Kosher and they have plans to get gluten-free certified in the end of Q2 2022.

Soylent

Founder: Demir Vangelov

Turns out that the perfect vegan snack isn’t a “traditional” snack at all. Soylent, the largest independent line of plant-based meal replacement beverages in the US, is the perfect choice to get a healthy start on your day. Eating a balanced plant-based diet is tricky. Soylent is disrupting the meal replacement industry by showing the world that balanced, sustainable plant-based nutrition can be as convenient as pulling up to your nearest drive thru. Soylent is the perfect snack for busy people on the go who don’t want to sacrifice nutrition and taste.

Recently, an immunologist and health expert told CNBC that sugar is the worst food ingredient for your immune system. Most of Soylent’s products also contain zero or low amounts of sugar, like Soylent Complete Protein with 0g of sugar and their delicious Creamy Chocolate protein shake and Original drink which have 1g of sugar.

All soy used in Soylent’s products is grown in the US with responsible environmental practices and Soylent delivers complete plant based protein, healthy fats, and 39 essential nutrients in convenient and affordable formats like drinks, powders and bars that are both good for you and the planet.

Soylent is formulated using vegan ingredients for sustainability and nutritional reasons and uses soy as their main ingredient for all of their products because it is a complete source of protein. In fact, it is the only plant protein to have a PDCAAS score of 1—the greatest score achievable.

Soylent products are available at nearly 20,000 retail locations in the US including Walmart, Target, and 7-Eleven, as well as on Amazon. In order to make sure everyone has access to complete nutrition, Soylent has developed their #SoylentForGood program that has donated millions of meals to date to food insecure populations.
