Microsoft Confirms Recall Will Be Available This October

Windows Recall is a new AI feature from Microsoft that has recently been sparking discussion due to its innovative yet very controversial nature. It is a feature that allows for constant capture of screenshots on a user’s PC to create a searchable database of their computer activity. This feature was initially meant to launch with the new Copilot+ PCs, however was moved to October for Windows Insiders, after their first round of testing showed many concerns when it came to security.

The delay was a decision influenced by the backlash from the community and the scrutiny from government agencies over privacy issues. Microsoft responded by introducing stricter security measures, such as optional activation during setup and tighter encryption protocols.

How Does Recall Work Exactly?

Microsoft Recall on Windows 11 is a feature that takes snapshots of your screen activities and saves them. This lets you search through everything you’ve done or seen on your computer using keywords or phrases. Whether it’s a file you opened, a website you visited, or a photo you viewed, Recall helps you quickly locate these items by understanding the context and content of your screen at any given time.

How Is Microsoft Working On These Concerns?

As a response to the concerns when it came to security within the testing process, Microsoft has made some adjustments to make sure that Windows Recall is as secure as possible before its release. The feature, once optional and now requiring activation by users, will incorporate advanced encryption levels to protect the data it collects, and access will demand Windows Hello bio authentication to make sure only authorised users can search through the data captured.

The tech company shared an update on their site that said:

“With a commitment to delivering a trustworthy and secure Recall (preview) experience on Copilot+ PCs for customers, we’re sharing an update that Recall will be available to Windows Insiders starting in October. As previously shared on June 13, we have adjusted our release approach to leverage the valuable expertise of our Windows Insider community prior to making Recall available for all Copilot+ PCs. Security continues to be our top priority and when Recall is available for Windows Insiders in October we will publish a blog with more details.”

What Can Users Expect In October?

For tech enthusiasts and Windows Insiders, October is a month to mark down, as Microsoft rolls out the first preview builds of Windows Recall. While the exact launch date within the month remains unspecified, this phase will allow users to test the feature and give feedback as a way to make the final tweaks.

The introduction of Windows Recall in the preview phase is an opportunity for Microsoft to demonstrate the practicality and safety of the feature before it is officially launched on all Copilot+ PCs. Given the sophisticated nature of the AI, and the promise of more user control over privacy settings, the upcoming previews will be a big part of finalising this version of Windows Recall, which is likely set for a big release some time in 2025.
