OpenAI, the company behind the popular ChatGPT, is reportedly in talks with Jony Ive, renowned Apple designer, to create an artificial intelligence device. The venture also involves Masayoshi Son of SoftBank and aims to build the “iPhone of artificial intelligence”.
A New Venture in AI
Jony Ive, Apple’s former VP of Industrial Design, is working with OpenAI. The concept behind this is to give users more natural and intuitive ways of interacting with AI than what is currently available.
The Visionaries Behind the Project
Jony Ive is Apple’s former VP of Industrial Design. He’s working with OpenAI to create this device and the idea behind this is to give users a more natural and intuitive way of interacting with AI.
The Creatives Behind the Project
Ive left Apple in 2019 after working there for almost 30 years. He played a huge part in developing the hardware designs of iconic devices. Some of the devices he worked on are iMac, iPhone and iPad. After leaving, Ive took part in a many other projects, including the design of some watch faces for the Apple Watch.
Sam Altman and Ive are discussing the possibility of a new AI hardware product. These conversations also include SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son, a big tech investor.

The Evolution of AI Interaction
Details on the device have yet to be revealed around what the device could look like. Possibilities range from a standalone ChatGPT-enabled smart speaker to headphones that allow wearers to interface directly with the AI bot.
The Financial Times suggested that the end game is “create a way of interacting with computers that is less reliant on screens”. This could mean that Ive’s latest creation might forego a screen.
A Competitive Edge in AI Technology
The announcement of the potential AI hardware product comes as tech companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon race to build AI technology in an effort to beat OpenAI’s conversational AI chatbot ChatGPT.
ChatGPT now has direct access to the internet, as well as the ability to “see, hear and speak”. The addition of voice and image recognition tools gives the generative AI similar capabilities to virtual assistants like Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri.
“ChatGPT can now browse the internet to provide you with current and authoritative information,” OpenAI announced recently.
It’s not really clear what an OpenAI-backed AI hardware device would entail. This collaboration could be just what it needs to stay ahead of the AI game. Jony Ive’s design expertise together OpenAI’s advanced technology could completely change how we interact with artificial intelligence.
