CMS Storyblok’s survey reveals that 38% of IT and marketing leaders are dissatisfied with the way their systems connect, while 24% describe the process as frustrating. Outdated legacy platforms, especially monolithic CMS systems, are often to blame. These older technologies rely on complex fixes, making modern connections harder to achieve.

Leaders also shared that 93% of their CMS platforms are already stretched beyond capacity. As teams try to add new tools or improve workflows, they encounter limitations that slow progress. Instead of efficient system connectivity, teams are left navigating workarounds that waste valuable time.

Businesses are now looking at alternatives, as their current setups are increasingly unsustainable. Integration issues are expected to dominate discussions in 2025 planning, with organisations needing solutions that work without unnecessary complications.

 

Why Is Collaboration Between IT And Marketing Struggling?

 

According to the survey, 40% of IT and marketing leaders find their working relationship inefficient or nonexistent. Marketing teams often depend heavily on IT for simple tasks like editing content or adjusting designs, which creates unnecessary delays.

These delays are caused in part by older CMS platforms. Many of these systems make it too risky for marketers to make changes independently, as a small mistake could disrupt an entire website. As a result, even minor updates require developer assistance, slowing down campaigns and creating frustration for everyone involved.

Some organisations are moving to systems that give marketing teams more freedom to work independently. This change reduces the workload for IT and speeds up timelines for both departments, cutting down on the back-and-forth that often derails projects.

Outdated content is a recurring issue, with the survey showing that 20–30% of material in CMS systems is no longer useful. Less than 29% of businesses update their websites monthly or more often, leaving irrelevant or outdated information online.

One in three companies admitted they have no effective process for auditing or revising old content. This means irrelevant material often remains online indefinitely, undermining a company’s credibility and making it harder to connect with their audience.

 

Why Are Businesses Unhappy With Their Websites?

 

48% of the businesses surveyed admit they feel embarrassed by their websites. Common complaints include poor design, clunky navigation, and a lack of user-friendly features. On average, companies estimate these issues cost them $72,000 in annual sales.

Many of these frustrations persist even with organisations spending an average of £359,389 on marketing technology. Leaders point to outdated CMS platforms as a major roadblock, as these systems are difficult to update and struggle to meet modern user expectations.

Improving website functionality is becoming more of a priority for companies. Creating more intuitive and engaging platforms is seen as a way to represent their brand values better and retain customer interest.
