About Origin Tech
Origin Tech is a tech company based in the North East of England which has developed a technology that detects and seals water leakages without excavation or knowing the exact location of the leakage. The company was founded back in 2019 by John Marsden and Phil Surtees, who both come from a background in infrastructure and critical resource transport.
Their solution Origin Find and Fix ™ combines two technologies: Origin Orbit® and Origin No Dig®. Origin Orbit® uses satellite technology and AI analytics to identify leaks within a 50 metre radius. Meanwhile, Origin No Dig® works by injecting an inert food-grade solution directly into the pipe which travels down the pipe until it reaches the leakage. It then forms an immediate seal before being flushed out the pipe, leaving the water quality unaffected.
Find and Fix ™ is ten times faster than traditional methods, results in 98% less carbon emissions, and is eight times cheaper to deploy. Origin Tech works with 11 UK water companies and of all the leaks Origin has identified, 92% of them were not previously known to the water companies. This in turn has saved over 3 billion litres of water to leakages, reducing water lost to leaks across England by over 32 million litres per day.
The UK water sector has been set the ambitious target by Ofwat of halving leakage volumes by 2050. This will be near impossible to meet unless the sector implements innovative solutions that can not just repair but also improve the nation’s dated water infrastructure. The traditional water leak detection systems are simply too slow, expensive, environmentally damaging, and disruptive – they are not fit to help the sector meet their 2050 targets. It is innovations like Origin’s that will be crucial in ensuring the sector is able to meet Ofwat’s goals.
