About Circular Computing

Circular Computing exists to create a more ethical, sustainable and socially responsible way to buy enterprise grade IT. Because IT shouldn’t cost the Earth.

Our journey began seven years ago with a critical question: “How can we remanufacture a laptop to be truly ‘like new’?” This question sparked our mission to combat e-waste by giving laptops a second life.

Recognising the limitations of refurbished laptops, we dedicated years to research and development. Our goal was clear: pioneer a Circular Remanufacturing Process that surpasses superficial refurbishment. This involves meticulously disassembling each laptop, testing, and replacing components where required, and expertly reassembling them to ensure peak performance and reliability.

This has been a long and challenging road, with businesses historically reluctant to give remanufactured tech a chance when it comes to their procurement. This reflects a well-worn – but incorrect – assumption that second-life devices must play second fiddle to brand new hardware and cannot measure up in performance. It’s an idea that has been hard to dispel.

Yet, in 2021 we obtained the proof we needed – the world’s first BSI Kitemark for Remanufactured laptops. This certification guarantees that our remanufactured laptops perform ‘equal to or better than new’. This helped light the spark for adopting sustainable business tech within the public and private sector.

Last summer, Circular Computing agreed a four-year deal to supply the Irish government, securing a 12.5% share of the country’s laptop market. Other partnerships with Kent County Council, Kings College Hospital, and The Royal Mint, have demonstrated how the message on remanufactured laptops is breaking through.

Our Circular Remanufacturing Process is helping to conserve the Earth’s natural resources one laptop at a time, by reducing the environmental cost of producing devices from scratch, including saving 190,000 litres of water. To date, we have saved more than 18 billion litres of water — enough to fill 7,300 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Ahead of COP29 last year, we announced our partnership with charity:water, committing to provide a family with clean water for every laptop we sell.

Every remanufactured laptop we produce cuts 316kg of CO2 emissions, compared with the standard production of a new model, creating 15 times less carbon emissions, as evidenced by an independent study from Cranfield University.

We recently hosted the “Re: Sustainable IT Summit” at our state-of-the-art facility in April 2024, bringing together key players from the IT industry, including OEMs, Distributors, Resellers, and ITAD Specialists. The summit’s significance lies in its ability to move the conversation from awareness to concrete action.

For Circular Computing’s mission to be successful we are also appealing to businesses’ bottom lines as well as their desire to be sustainable, with our remanufactured devices costing up to 40% less than brand-new equivalent models.

And as we boost awareness and adoption of remanufactured devices, our work is only just getting started. We will continue to drive the message that second-life tech is an important step towards Net Zero and help to guide organisations and the IT channel on this path to a sustainable future.

We are proud to be a UK-based company challenging the status quo and offering a solution the world desperately needs.
