About A Healthier Earth

A Healthier Earth brings to life impactful climate projects at scale, focused on decarbonising digital infrastructure, the removal of carbon, and adapting to the realities of climate change. It operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Pure Data Centres Group.

Founded in 2021, it brings together an expert climate team combining science, project management, and critical systems thinking to develop, deliver and operate profitable solutions that help restore the world. Its geo-specific approach enables it to develop the best solutions to meet regional and global environmental objectives and help solve Earth’s most pressing and complex challenges.

Last year A Healthier Earth announced its biggest project to date: the creation of Europe’s largest biochar production facility. Biochar is a form of captured and sequestered carbon, which is recognised by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as an important carbon removal technology. It is created from end-of-life plant material, through a process called pyrolysis – heating the feedstock to over 500°C with little or no oxygen.

This results in a porous particulate, made of up to 90% carbon which was originally captured by the plant matter, and is now stored in the biochar. Experts say the use of biochar in locking away carbon could be a significant contributor in meeting the Paris Agreement of 1.5°C, with research suggesting it can store carbon for hundreds, if not thousands of years.

Due to be operational later this year, the new site in Royal Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire will produce 9,000 tonnes of biochar a year, sequestering up to 17,000 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere, which is the equivalent to the emissions of over 5,500 gas-powered passenger vehicles, or 36 return flights from London to LA. The site will use local organic waste, preventing it from ending up in landfill or incineration.

A Healthier Earth is also the creator of ForestFactory®, which uses innovative farming technologies to increase the effectiveness, survival rate and speed of reforestation projects. Delivered as a partnership with Blenheim Palace, it uses vertical farming, micropropagation and biochar to find solutions to some of the biggest challenges facing the forestry industry, and will see 600,000 trees planted across the Blenheim Palace Estate over the next three years.

A Healthier Earth believes that the biggest challenge facing climate solutions is scale. The current reality is that the market isn’t yet used to true scale, combining market economics realities with developing projects that deliver multiple and meaningful environmental benefits.

A Healthier Earth tackles this challenge head on, drawing on Pure Data Centres Group’s experience pioneering new infrastructure at pace. Collectively, the organisation uses its strengths and scaling mindset to create and deploy global climate projects, working together to solve the complex problems on the way to building a healthier earth.
