Ivy Farm Technologies is a pioneering British food tech company specializing in the production of cultivated meat—real meat grown directly from animal cells without the need for traditional livestock farming. Established in 2019 as a spinout from the University of Oxford, Ivy Farm aims to revolutionize meat production by offering sustainable, ethical, and environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional meat.
The company’s innovative process begins by extracting a small sample of muscle cells from an animal. These cells are then placed in bioreactors, where they are nurtured with essential nutrients and vitamins, enabling them to multiply and develop into muscle tissue. This method produces genuine meat that retains the taste and texture consumers expect, all without the need for animal slaughter.
In 2022, Ivy Farm unveiled an 18,000-square-foot pilot production plant near Oxford University. This facility, among the largest of its kind in Europe, is equipped with a 600-liter bioreactor capable of producing approximately 2.8 tonnes of cultivated meat annually. The plant serves as a platform for refining manufacturing processes, scaling production, and advancing research and development efforts.
The environmental benefits of cultivated meat are significant. Traditional livestock farming is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and biodiversity loss. Cultivated meat production requires substantially fewer resources, reducing carbon emissions by up to 92% and land use by as much as 95% compared to conventional methods.
