About Metis Engineering

Metis Engineering, a UK-based company, was founded by Joe Holdsworth in 2016. The company’s inception stemmed from involvement in remarkable projects such as the Bloodhound SSC and the Electroflight project in partnership with Rolls-Royce Aerospace, aiming to ensure battery safety for the world’s fastest electric aeroplane.

As the mobility sector moved towards electrification Metis Engineering has been at the forefront of addressing the safety both of the R&D phase of battery technology and production electric vehicles. With the development of a family of CAN-based environmental sensors designed to address critical challenges of safety, emissions monitoring, and operational efficiency in static energy storage and electric applications, and hydrogen systems thereby contributing to safer and more efficient energy storage solutions.

For example, Metis Engineering’s Cell Guard sensor is engineered to monitoring the environmental conditions inside a battery pack enabling engineers to optimise them for maximum efficiencies. By knowing key parameters such as dew point inside a battery pack and if any moisture ingress has occurred, engineers are ultimately able to reduce the potential for thermal events (fires). In addition, the sensor will give early warning of volatile organic compounds emitted when a cell goes ‘bad’. This can lead to thermal runaway, which becomes a fire. The early detection enables the load to a pack to be cut and the safe evacuation of the vehicle.

In addition to early detection of thermal events, continuous monitoring during their first life also leads to a better second life valuation and total cost of ownership of battery packs.

The sensor also has an accelerometer which records shock loadings, so engineers can know what impact a battery pack has experienced in the case of a collision, and make an informed decision as to whether the car can be safely repaired, the pack reused in another application, or if it has to be scrapped entirely.

Through these innovations, Metis Engineering has made a positive environmental impact by enhancing the safety and efficiency of both static energy storage systems , hydrogen fuel-cell and hydrogen combustion systems, which are crucial components in the transition to sustainable energy solutions. With over 200 clients using Metis Engineering sensors in everything from electric boats, aircraft, trucks, buses, racing cars and stationary energy storage, Metis is helping the green energy transition happen safely.
