About Feather

Expats face overwhelming bureaucracy upon arrival to a new country. In the EU, Germany presents a paradox – despite the reputation for German efficiency, the reality is that administrative processes remain largely offline and paper-based.

Feather is a digital insurance platform that brings digital convenience to a traditionally complex, procedural industry. Headquartered in Berlin, the fintech company was founded in 2018 by Rob Schumacher and Vincent Audoire after both of them struggled to navigate the insurance system as expats in Germany.

Vincent moved from France to Germany, and after a couple of years in residence, he still did not have the most basic liability insurance because the process was 100% in German and highly complex. Rob, despite having spent exactly half of his life in the country as a British national with German heritage, struggled with the insurance system, which wanted to charge thousands in broker fees for the most basic private health insurance – a mandatory requirement for expats.

There are now over 50 million expats living and working in Europe, each of whom require different types and levels of cover. The Feather digital insurance platform makes it easier for expats to find and use the right insurance products for them, but also gain access to lower fees, easier cancellation terms, and overall better customer experience. It’s designed with the transient nature of expats in mind – instead of year-long sign ups, Feather builds shorter, more flexible insurance contracts with low upfront costs.

In 2024, Feather secured €6 million in a funding round led by Keen Venture Partners with Plural and industry leaders from Allianz, AXA, Bastiant Kunkel, Mozo, GoCardless, Nested, N26, and Oyster. The fintech has since launched in Spain and France with ambitions to incorporate additional European countries in the next year.

Insurance needs also vary greatly by country. In Germany, dogs need liability policies depending on breed and location. In France, contents insurance (which includes liability) is legally required for renters. In Spain, from January next year, e-bikes will require insurance. Insurance tends to be overly complicated, and it’s hard for expats to know what they actually need – what is mandatory in their new country of residence, and what isn’t? And it’s even harder for expats to navigate this when they don’t speak the local language.

Feather simplifies the administrative burden for expats by providing English-language support for insurance. From signing up, to filing a claim or cancelling your policy, Feather has turned insurance digital: no more headaches, no more confusion.

The company has helped more than 100,000 people from over 150 countries. It gives expats honest, unbiased advice so they have the information they need to make the right decision and not miss anything critical in their move. The Feather fintech solution is the digital insurance companion for expats in Europe.
