According to a new report by VISA, the biggest frustration with online checkouts comes down to security. Although websites do need to implement extra measures to keep customers safe, many are losing out on sales as a result. As consumers demand more secure and more seamless eCommerce experiences, modern businesses need to adapt.

The Importance of Seamless and Secure Experiences

VISA are now working directly with partners to enable various payments solutions, such as Click To Pay.

This utilises biometrics as a way to eliminate key pain points that people experience when making online transactions. Although recent measures like this are good, certain businesses have managed to maintain positive reputations for security for many years now. Amazon and Apple have long mastered the art of low-friction security, with secure saved payments, intelligent fraud detection, and biometric logins on mobile devices.

Casinos have also been raising the bar on security. In a given category, like online blackjack, people can hop between a multitude of games in a given session, thereby often making smaller deposits throughout the day rather than a single one-off payment.

This is especially the case when you look at games like Premium Blackjack, as the minimum stake is only £1.00. Good security is paramount, but to make the experience more streamlined, many casinos are now adopting a PIN code login. While passwords can be compromised, PINs are often localised to the device, which makes it harder to steal and use from a remote location.

Other measures include automated tools that scan where security can be improved, eliminating the need for extensive verification checks. Measures like this show how possible it is for online sites to streamline their security checks, something that modern businesses should be putting a big focus on in 2025.

VISA’s new findings support this as well, and even though their new measures could be quite some time away, it does highlight a very important issue that needs addressing.

Entering Card Details Manually

Even though 40% of people find that the biggest frustration with checking out online is security concerns, it’s followed by another big issue. 37% of people find it a hassle to enter card details manually, but if retailers adopt more payment methods, then this would certainly fix the issue, leading to increased customer satisfaction across the board.

Key findings from the VISA report indicate that people have a strong preference for streamlined checkouts when sending money online, and that 65% of people would support one registration process for all online merchants. On top of this, 67% of people said that they would willingly use biometric authentication to check out, as a way to speed up the process. This would be much faster than traditional security checks, and it would also eliminate the need for continuous passwords and security checks.

Even though companies do need to take steps to ensure that they are embracing online security, one thing is clear. Security does not need to come at the expense of customers. Numerous sectors are showing how possible it is to streamline security and verification online without imposing numerous security steps.

Whether it is through a PIN code, intelligent fraud detection, or saved payment methods, the online world is changing, and businesses have to change with it or risk falling behind.
