Samsung is the next big tech giant who will be partnering with OpenAI and some of its own affiliates to work on global AI data centre infrastructure. The deal, announced in Seoul, involves Samsung Electronics, Samsung SDS, Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries.
The partnership will bring together eah side’s strengths in semiconductors, cloud systems, shipbuilding and data centres. OpenAI’s Stargate initiative, which is working on scaling AI infrastructure worldwide, will be leading the plan.
Samsung said its partnership with OpenAI is a really important step in supporting South Korea’s ambition to become one of the top 3 nations in AI. The company also plans to introduce ChatGPT-based systems internally to improve its workplace operations.
What Will Samsung Electronics Be Doing?
Samsung Electronics will act as a strategic memory supplier for OpenAI’s Stargate project. The company reports that OpenAI’s memory demand could reach 900,000 DRAM wafers each month. Samsung plans to meet this through its high-performance, energy-efficient memory chips.
The firm’s technology covers the full AI process, from the training to inference. It will also use its packaging and integration systems to connect memory and logic chips, helping OpenAI manage heavy data workloads efficiently.
Samsung Electronics Chairman Jay Y. Lee said that the collaboration marked a pivotal point in the rise of AI, adding that the company would work with OpenAI to “catalyse breakthroughs and possibilities.”
How Is Samsung SDS Contributing?
Samsung SDS will help design and operate OpenAI’s Stargate data centres. The company will support OpenAI with consulting, deployment and management services for clients that want to use AI models in their systems.
Under the agreement, Samsung SDS will also act as a reseller for OpenAI’s services in South Korea. It plans to assist local businesses in adopting ChatGPT Enterprise and related products to increase AI use in corporate environments.
The partnership will give Samsung SDS an important role in the infrastructure behind AI development, especially in areas that require advanced data processing and storage.

What Are Samsung C&T And Samsung Heavy Industries Building?
Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries will work with OpenAI to create floating AI data centres. These centres could solve problems linked to land shortages but also lowering cooling costs and carbon emissions.
Although floating data centres are still rare due to technical difficulties, Samsung believes its engineering knowledge in shipbuilding and construction can help develop them. Both companies also plan to explore floating power plants and control centres that could support future AI infrastructure.
Samsung’s intention with all this is to move beyond traditional land-based data hubs and experiment with solutions that could make AI operations more efficient.
Where Does South Korea Fit Into OpenAI’s Stargate Plan?
OpenAI’s Stargate initiative was made to strengthen AI infrastructure around the world, and South Korea is becoming a central location in that plan. OpenAI says that it has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Science and ICT to assess locations outside Seoul for new AI data centres. The goal is to spread development across different regions and create new jobs.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said Korea has strong technology talent, infrastructure and government support, calling it an ideal partner for global AI expansion.
The initiative also involves SK Group. Together with Samsung, SK hynix will scale up advanced memory chip production to meet OpenAI’s increasing hardware needs. Both companies target 900,000 DRAM wafer starts per month to power AI models worldwide.
SK Chairman Chey Tae-won described Stargate as a “landmark moment” for SK and said it will drive innovation in semiconductors, data centres, energy and networks.
