About Genous

Genous is the UK’s intelligent home retrofit company, transforming the way people make their homes more energy efficient, comfortable, and environmentally responsible. In a sector plagued by poor data and transparency, weak customer service and no empowerment of consumers, Genous is redefining the standard, bringing cutting-edge technology, trusted advice, and seamless delivery together to generate meaningful environmental and financial returns and make energy-efficient living accessible and effective.

The recommendations Genous makes to users can typically save them upwards of 3 tonnes of CO2 per year. Its customers, who are typically larger consumers of energy, are saving on average a little over 5 tonnes per household. With over 40 customers currently in design or installation at Genous, that’s over 200 tonnes of CO2 avoided every year just from the people it’s helping right now and shows the importance of big steps like home retrofit (it would take 3 million disposable coffee cups to be avoided each year to hit the same number).

Founded in 2022 by entrepreneur and climate scientist Simon Bones, Genous was born from Simon’s own frustrations retrofitting his homes and his deep commitment to tackling climate change. As a former visiting research fellow at the University of Bristol and a successful record of business leadership, Simon assembled a team of industry experts, technologists, and operational specialists to create something new: a data-led, customer-first approach to home retrofit.

At the heart of Genous is its digital home twinning platform, the UK’s most advanced and accurate tool for modelling home performance. It allows customers to visualise the impact, cost, and payback of dozens of potential improvements, both individually and in combination, and to take their own decisions on what they want to do. This holistic view is vital in a modern electrified home, where heat pumps, solar panels, insulation, and EV charging must all work together. The result is personalised, evidence-based advice rather than the one-size-fits-all recommendations of traditional Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs).

Unlike most providers, Genous offers a truly end-to-end service across all major retrofit measures. Genous contracts directly with homeowners under its own accreditations and manages every stage, from planning and utility permissions to installation, acting as a single accountable partner.

The company also collaborates with mortgage lenders, builders, and architects to embed retrofit into home improvement and financing. With retrofit costs typically starting at £10,000, these partnerships are key to making energy upgrades accessible to the wider market. Genous is helping mortgage providers lead the charge in green lending, making sustainable homes achievable for ordinary households rather than just the affluent few – and is planning for the launch of a game-changing integrated financial and project management offer in the coming weeks with a regional lender.

Although intelligent retrofits can generate strong financial returns for customers, Genous is proudly values-driven. Its mission is to reduce emissions, and home and energy emissions represent a staggering 37% of the UK’s consumption-based CO2e emissions, excluding overseas-produced goods and services.

Genous works exclusively with high-quality SME installer partners, has no commission-based sales teams, and prioritises customer trust, regularly advising against measures that don’t align with client goals. Simon Bones has provided evidence to MPs at the Energy Security and Net Zero Select Committee and is a regular media contributor on retrofit policy and consumer protection.

By combining innovation, integrity, and impact, Genous is not just improving homes; it’s reshaping the future of sustainable living in the UK.
