Just a few months ago, in December 2025, the European Commission and EIB Group announced a new initiative to invest €10 billion into Europe’s biotech sector.
The project is designed to make Europe a bigger player in the global biotech industry, helping drive more investment into the discovery and development of new biotechnologies.
This is off the back of a huge jump in interest in the biotech sector over recent years. In fact, according to the BIA, the UK’s biotech sector raised £3.5 billion in 2024, up 94% from the previous year.
Across Europe, the level of funding in the sector hit a record €4.7 billion.
What Actually Is Biotech?
Biotechnology, or biotech, involves using or adapting living organisms for human benefit. This might be through genetic engineering, creating disease-resistant crops or developing new vaccines.
Ultimately, biotech leans on using existing biology to help improve the quality of life for people around the world.
Who Is Investing In Biotech?
But who exactly is investing in biotech? Here, we take a look at some of the European VCs that are backing biotech across Europe.
