About Mari-Carmen Sanchez-Morris
I am a former Paediatric Intensive Care nurse turned health tech founder building one of the first AI powered maternal health platforms designed specifically for working mothers.
I began my career in 2012 at Birmingham Children Hospital, delivering critical care in high pressure intensive care environments. For ten years I cared for severely ill children and supported families through some of the most traumatic moments of their lives. During that time, I saw a pattern that was rarely discussed. Mothers were often unsupported, overwhelmed and navigating fragmented healthcare systems without preventative guidance.
After becoming a mother myself, I experienced these gaps firsthand. Maternal health pathways were reactive rather than preventative. Women were expected to return to work resilient and productive, despite physical recovery, hormonal shifts and mental health challenges. I realised the issue was systemic and technology could play a transformative role.
I founded Matresa to shift maternal health from reactive crisis management to personalised preventative care. Matresa is clinical grade preventative maternal health platform supporting women from conception through postpartum and return to work. Our Dyad data model integrates real time data, behavioural science and clinical insight to provide continuous support for both mother and baby across the lifespan of motherhood.
Building a health tech startup as a female founder has not been straightforward. Female founders received just 2.8 percent of venture funding last year. I bootstrapped the early stages while raising three children and left a stable clinical career to pursue this mission full time. Securing 315,000 pounds in pre seed funding this year marked a significant milestone and positioned Matresa as a rare success story in women led technology.
The impact is already measurable. In our pilot with a Big Four firm, wellbeing scores increased from 5.2 to 7.8 within eight weeks. Productivity rose by 20 percent and energy and mood improved by 50 percent. These results demonstrate that maternal health is not only a healthcare issue but a strategic business imperative. Replacing a senior female leader can cost up to 150,000 pounds, and one in three mothers leaves the workforce within a year of childbirth. Our technology helps employers retain talent while improving long term health outcomes for women.
My work sits at the intersection of healthcare, artificial intelligence and workplace equity. I am redefining maternal health as preventative, personalised and data driven. More importantly, I am challenging the narrative that motherhood and career progression are in conflict.
I believe technology should solve real human problems. Maternal health is one of the most overlooked yet economically critical challenges of our time. Through Matresa, I am building the infrastructure to support millions of mothers while reshaping how businesses approach women health and retention.
