Can’t Find Your Car? AI Can Now Help You Locate Your Parking Spot

Last year, Churchill motor insurance wanted to have a look at the parking experience and how drivers are behaving when it comes to where and how they park.

Well, that research found that 4.3 million drivers misplaced their vehicles just during the festive period. That experience has brought in a new solution: AI helping people get back to their cars and helping them avoid the search altogether.

Why Were So Many Drivers Losing Their Cars?

The problem happens more often than most people admit, with the same research showing drivers misplaced their cars 6 times on average over the past year. Car parks at shopping centres had 32% of these cases, followed by multi storey sites at 30% and supermarkets at 24%.

Airports and train stations are also there on the list, though less often, and even home streets are not excluded from this either, with 6% of drivers saying they lost their car close to where they live. These everyday locations make the issue feel frustrating and repetitive.

Time adds up quite fast, with drivers spending 13 minutes on average looking for their vehicle each time it goes missing. Over a year, that works out to almost three and a half days spent walking around car parks.

Age is a factor here as drivers aged 18 to 34 reported the highest rate, with 42% saying they lost their vehicle during the festive period compared to 22% of those aged 35 to 54.

The reasons are easy to recognise, as 38% said they were in a rush, another 38% were in an unfamiliar place and 33% blamed distraction. Stress and busy streets also came up often in the findings.

What Are People Doing To Find Their Cars?

Many drivers use basic habits to keep track of their parking location, with 19% taking a photo and 16% trying to park in the same spot each time. Others get creative by asking friends to remember or sending themselves voice notes with details.

Digital tools are in use, though not by everyone, as 9% drop a pin on a map app and 8% use their vehicle’s app to locate it. A smaller group place tracking devices in their cars to avoid losing them again.

Even with these methods, most people fall back on walking around until they spot their vehicle. The research shows 60% retrace their steps, while 6% ask security to check footage and another 6% turn to strangers for help.

Nicholas Mantel, Head of Churchill Motor Insurance, said: “Our research shows that people frequently forget where they park when they are in a rush, feeling stressed or navigating busy streets. With so many cars in shades of grey, black and white dominating the UK market, finding your lost car can sometimes feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. To avoid an extra festive headache, take a moment to make a note of where you have parked, whether it is dropping a pin in your maps app or sending yourself a message with details of your location. A few simple steps can make all the difference in reducing parking-related stress this holiday season.”

How Is AI Changing The Parking Experience?

AI now deals with the everyday problem of finding parking through systems that guide people straight to a booked parking space and remove the need to search. These tools use data to match drivers with available spots and map the quickest route to reach them.

YourParkingSpace reports that drivers have saved more than 75,000 hours by booking spaces in advance through its system. That time saving comes from removing guesswork and driving straight to a known spot without circling.

The environmental effect is also worth bringing up, as the company says 355 tonnes of CO2 emissions have been saved through shorter journeys. It has also planted 54,000 trees to offset carbon from driving and long searches for parking.

Fewer cars circling the same area means less congestion on busy streets and inside packed car parks. The system also supports electric vehicle users, as access to a large database of charging stations allows drivers to search and book a space with a charge point ready.

The app records the parking location and guides them back when they return. This removes the need to memorise rows or nearby signs in crowded spaces.

Is This The End Of Losing Your Car?

Losing a car may not disappear overnight, though the direction is easy to follow with tech becoming more common in everyday driving. Booking systems and AI tools turn parking into something far more organised and predictable.

People no longer need to depend on memory or luck when leaving their vehicle in a busy car park. The mix of pre booked spaces, location tracking and guided navigation removes much of the frustration that comes with searching.
