Researchers from the University of Auckland have looked at this subject. One project linked what people wrote on social media with donations. Anger on platforms seemed tied to later gifts to the university, while sadness gave a boost to a foundation that fights treatable blindness. These patterns brought up the question about whether or not a system could detect moods.
Human interactions consist of reading subtle emotional cues. There is a big difference between a calm remark and a furious outburst, even when the words appear similar. Machines that sift through text may pick up on certain hints, but this is complex. Some phrases that would express disappointment might have a very different emotional weight than those expressing frustration, for example.
Many of these large-scale language systems already respond in ways that appear thoughtful. ChatGPT-4, for instance, can answer in ways that seem to mirror the mood in a user’s text. In tests, it reached levels that match average adults in certain tasks. Google Bard, in one study, struggled with visuals but handled text-based emotional questions fairly well.
Online conversation about this topic can feel divided. Some people see emotional detection as helpful, while others worry about data misuse or privacy. Written scenarios are measured differently. A tool known as the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale sets up real-life situations, then asks the participant, “How would this person feel? How would the other person feel?” ChatGPT-4 and Bard have both been put through this scale. Results showed that each system can produce language that matches emotional states more closely than many thought possible.

People sometimes ask if it matters that a machine does not have real feelings. Much of the training data for these systems comes from certain regions, which might limit their grasp of how people express emotion in different places. This is one area that has not been studied in depth.
