OpenAI Explores Developer Interest in Integrating ChatGPT Directly Into Apps

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly prevalent in just about everything we do – from professional activity in the workplace to daily functions in things like schooling, healthcare and general bureaucracy – it’s only a matter of time until AI doesn’t just feel like it’s everywhere, it actually is everywhere. And, unsurprisingly, OpenAI seems to be taking the first steps towards making this a reality.

On Tuesday, the company published a request for developers interested in exploring this possibility – that is, to make it possible for users to sign into third-party applications using ChatGPT accounts – to sign up for via their web page in order to be evaluated and reviewed by the OpenAI team.

Along with the application option was a link for interested parties to view a preview of the service by means of Codex CLI.

“Sign In with ChatGPT”: What Does This New Service Actually Mean?

So, what exactly is this new feature? What does it mean and why is it becoming a big deal in the world of AI and among OpenAI’s competitors?

Many argue that the intention behind the mass integration, so to speak, of ChatGPT into a broad range of online services is to capitalise on the company’s current popularity and dominance in the industry. With approximately 600 million monthly users, according to TechCrunch, ChatGPT is easily one of the largest consumer applications in the world, so it’s no wonder that OpenAI is going to put all their effort into both maintaining and expanding its dominance. q

By offering this new service, OpenAI could potentially compete seriously with other large consumer technology companies like Microsoft, Apple and Google, expanding their reach beyond AI.

Essentially, the preview that’s offered on ChatGPT’s webpage allows developers who are interested in the integration opportunity to experience what it’s like in OpenAI’s Codex CLI which is their very own open source AI coding tool for terminals. Essentially, what this preview feature provides is the opportunity for developers to connect their own ChatGPT accounts (whether it’s the Free, Plus or Pro version) to their API accounts. Thus, developers have the chance to test out the service before completely committing.

What Does This Integration Mean for the Future of AI?

Essentially, this kind of extended integration pretty much means that AI will really be part of everything we do – it’s not just going to feel like AI is everywhere, it really will be everywhere. So, in a broader sense, AI will simply be more pervasive than ever before.

For OpenAI in particular (even though other companies are sure to follow soon), this, in theory, will allow them more dominance in the industry. The more platforms and programmes that ChatGPT is integrated into now, the more power and dominance it’ll have in AI going forward. Thus, it’s no surprise that as one of the leading players in the AI race, so to speak, this is a move they’ve decided to make.

However, as always, it remains to be seen just how effective this integration is, on the one hand, also what the uptake is like among developers, because at the end of the day, it can only be successful if developers are willing to give it a go.
