Baking together since they were old enough to reach the MagiMix, co-founders & cousins Laura Jackson and Sam Feller left their fast paced city jobs in Management Consultancy and Real Estate Management to launch Popcorn Shed.
During a trip to the US, the pair discovered gourmet popcorn, and on returning to the UK they realised that great tasting and high quality popcorn was not easy to source, spotting a gap in the mainstream market.
‘We had always flirted with the idea of running our own family food business together, and around our 30th birthdays, we had a “now or never” moment. We set ourselves a challenge to create the best tasting popcorn in the world. Little did we know it would lead us to packing in our city jobs and heading off to the garden shed!”
Like most startups, there is always personal sacrifice. In order to save money for the enterprise, Jackson moved back home to live with her parents, and soon her newfound venture had set up shop in the garden of her family home.
‘We dedicated months in the kitchen working on the recipes and experimenting with over 100 different flavours, even blowing up a popcorn machine in the process! We finally hit on a winning formula, and so many requests followed from friends and family that we ended up storing it in the garden shed. Our families started calling it the Popcorn Shed, and that’s how we named our business.’
Popcorn Shed’s focus on creating distinctive and innovative flavour combinations won them an artisan producer’s Award from the BBC Good Food Show, a Great Taste Award for the Salted Caramel flavour and a listing with Harrods, just 3 months after launch.
