About Bramble Energy
Bramble Energy (Bramble) is an award-winning cleantech business accelerating global decarbonisation and powering the transition to a Net Zero world. Backed by £41 million in investment from leading firms such as HydrogenOne Capital, Parkwalk Advisors, UCL Technology Fund, BGF and IP Group, Bramble is scaling its team, technologies and production capabilities.
Founded in 2016 by Dr. Tom Mason, an experienced engineer and leading expert in electrochemistry, Bramble was spun out from UCL and Imperial College London. Since Tom’s appointment as CEO, he has brought a fresh and dynamic approach to Bramble Energy and led the company through a successful Series A funding round during these most challenging times.
Bramble has been recognised with multiple industry awards, including “Business Transformation of the Year” at the Lloyds Bank British Business Excellence Awards 2023 and named a Deloitte UK Fast 50 Regional winner.
Headquartered in a multi-million-pound hydrogen innovation hub in Crawley, UK, Bramble Energy is at the forefront of hydrogen technology development, making clean energy more accessible, scalable and commercially viable.
By harnessing advanced manufacturing techniques and leveraging existing industrial supply chains, Bramble is addressing key challenges in cost, scalability and deployment that have historically slowed hydrogen adoption.
What challenges has Bramble Energy overcome?
A major challenge in hydrogen adoption is its high cost and complex supply chain, which has made scaling difficult. Traditional fuel cells require bespoke, expensive manufacturing processes, limiting commercial viability.
Bramble has overcome this with its PCB-X™ technology, allowing fuel cells and electrolysers to be produced using the global PCB supply chain. This removes supply chain barriers, significantly reducing costs while enabling large-scale production.
Scaling hydrogen also requires infrastructure expansion. Unlike batteries, hydrogen refuelling networks remain limited. Bramble Energy is working with industry leaders and policymakers to integrate its cost-effective hydrogen solutions into logistics, transport and off-grid power applications, accelerating adoption.
Hydrogen technology must also deliver high performance at a competitive price. In 2024, Bramble Energy tripled power density in its fuel cells while halving production costs, proving clean hydrogen power can be both accessible and scalable.
What environmental impact has Bramble Energy had?
Bramble Energy is actively reducing carbon emissions by driving hydrogen innovation and deployment, providing key technological advancements and real-world prototypes.
Key contributions to sustainability include:
Advancing commercial-scale hydrogen adoption: Successfully completed a £1.8 million project funded by the Advanced Propulsion Centre’s (APC) Scale-up Readiness Validation (SuRV), proving the real-world scalability of hydrogen for industry and logistics.
Pioneering clean hydrogen for boats: Bramble contributed to the world’s first hydrogen-powered boat, showcasing hydrogen as a sustainable alternative for the maritime sector, which is traditionally highly polluting.
Progressing hydrogen-powered public transport: As part of a £12.7 million hydrogen-powered double-deck bus project, Bramble played a key role in advancing fuel cell technology. While external supply chain challenges delayed deployment, progress made has strengthened the foundation for future hydrogen mobility initiatives.
These initiatives reflect Bramble Energy’s commitment to driving sustainable progress, ensuring hydrogen remains a commercially viable and scalable solution for global decarbonisation.
