At International Animal Rescue (IAR), animal rescue, sustainability and conservation are at the heart of our mission. We work to protect wildlife, restore habitats, and empower local communities to create lasting change.
To date over 770 animals have been rescued and released, including orangutans, slow lorises, and other endangered species. The successful rehabilitation and release of Budi, an orangutan rescued from severe neglect, showcases the power of long-term conservation. With over 70 orangutans released into Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park and four wild births recorded, our work is helping populations recover.
Technology plays a crucial role in our efforts. Our SMART Patrols use tracking devices, drones, alarm sensors, and camera traps to monitor wildlife, detect threats, and prevent illegal activity. These tools allow us to track rehabilitated animals post-release, ensuring their survival. In forests prone to deforestation and poaching, drones and camera traps provide real-time surveillance, helping rangers respond swiftly to threats. Alarm sensors installed in critical areas alert teams to illegal logging, leading to an 88% reduction in forest crimes.
Mangroves are a vital ecosystem that we actively protect and restore. These coastal forests act as carbon sinks, storing up to four times more carbon than rainforests, while also serving as natural barriers against rising sea levels and extreme weather. Through our initiatives, we have supported mangrove restoration projects, helping local communities plant and protect these critical habitats. Healthy mangroves not only protect biodiversity but also provide sustainable livelihoods for people living along coastlines.
We have protected over 300,000 hectares of critical habitat, including deep peat swamp forests, preventing 70 million tonnes of CO₂e emissions. Our Power of Mama firefighting team, a 96 strong team of inspiring women, uses innovative fire prevention techniques, reducing forest fires and safeguarding biodiversity.
