About Clean Energy Capital
Business: Private-wire renewable energy for data centres on the road to net-zero.
Clean Energy Capital (CEC) is connecting the UKs largest data centres to locally-generated renewable energy sources, helping them make tangible progress towards net-zero while lowering costs and insulating critical infrastructure from energy market volatility.
Our growing appetite for technology — from generative AI to connected cars — sits in uneasy contradiction to the need for decarbonisation and greater sustainability.
The data centre industry needs to decide whether it is part of the solution or a part of the problem.
GenAI, cryptocurrency mining, and the rising tide of digitalisation are driving up demand for data centres (and the electricity and water required to power and cool them). Globally, demand for data centre capacity is expected to rise sharply throughout the decade. Meeting this demand alongside even the most conservative net zero presents a significant challenge. Right now, the world’s largest tech firms are doubling (and tripling) down on AI investment, and the industrys goals of unprecedented growth seem increasingly at odds with its role in the green transition.
We know that greenwashing is a serious and widespread issue in this industry. Between 2020 and 2022, the world’s largest data centre companies emitted 7.623 times more greenhouse gases than they admitted to. It is just not good enough. Operators must align their actions with their messaging and prioritise concrete, tangible steps towards net-zero.
That’s where CECs private-wire solar solutions come in. We do not believe the climate crisis will be solved by a silver bullet. In the real world, big problems are solved by a thousand small solutions, by industries coming together to make change happen one step at a time. CECs private-wire solar initiative is one of those steps.
CECs private-wire solutions support between 20% and 30% of the largest data centres power demands. Activating private-wire solar immediately reduces a site’s carbon impact, with private-wire solar cutting an 80 MW facility’s emissions by 14,237 tonnes in the first year, and its lifetime CO2 output by over a half a million (528,800) tonnes — the equivalent of planting over 25 million trees.
Brought together by veteran renewables evangelist Alexander Goodall, CECs team of industry experts span the land, commercial, project management, and technical disciplines. The company’s team boasts over 75 years of combined expertise in renewables, power, and electricity grid networks. We have the skills, experience, and passion for a more sustainable infrastructure sector to drive real, meaningful change.
We are a counter-argument to the data centre operators who say sustainability in an AI-saturated world just isn’t possible. We are helping the world’s biggest data centre operators take real, meaningful steps towards decarbonisation in what we hope will be a viable model for other high-energy industries looking to transition towards private renewable generation.
We are not a silver bullet, but we do not pretend to be. What we are is a meaningful part of the solution, not the problem.
