About Monumo

The global EV market is worth more than $600bn. However, the shift to electric vehicles (EVs) is plagued by issues, including high costs and the use of rare earth magnets, which are environmentally damaging and hard to recycle. Cost and range of current EV powertrains is limiting uptake and slowing the move to a decarbonised transport system – a critical step in helping to achieve our Net Zero goals.

More widely, electric motors consume 50% of the world’s electricity, and are not as efficient or sustainable as they need to be. For example, just a 5% improvement in electric motors would equate to removing the emissions of France and Germany combined.

Founded in 2021, Monumo is a Cambridge-based company combining deeptech with traditional engineering to revolutionise electric motor design and design the world’s best electric motors. Driven by the desire to move the needle on decarbonisation, it has identified the EV market – an industry growing 18% year on year – as the crucial entry point for its technology.

Dominic Vergine, the founder and CEO, was previously the VP of Sustainability at ARM, advised on the role of technology in the UN Global Goals and founded the 2030Vision Partnership. The engineering and research team is led by CTO, Dr Jaroslaw Rzepecki, who was previously a Senior Software Engineer at Microsoft, ARM and Siemens. Over half of the Monumo team have PhDs in physics, electronics, ML, computer science and engineering, which allows the company to harness AI to create optimal motor designs faster and better than any other company – and in ways that have never been possible.

The team has developed a scalable, machine learning-friendly engine, “Anser”. The Anser Engine offers a breakthrough in design capability for the £1.7 trillion engineering industry, reducing years-long engineering projects to just weeks. By using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), Monumo can explore hundreds of thousands of prototype designs in a matter of a few days and generate the best-ever electric motors – beyond human capabilities and developed in just a fraction of the time thought previously possible.

Monumo can reduce the weight, cost, and materials for the same performance; improve recyclability; achieve high efficiency across drive cycles at both low and high speeds; and remove the need for rare earth magnets. In turn, this will enable Monumo to tackle the blockers associated with the EV transition and encourage more widespread adoption.

Monumo’s technology can currently reduce electric drive design time by 80% and decrease permanent magnet content by around a quarter without sacrificing quality or efficiency. This innovative approach facilitates a far more efficient and sustainable manufacturing process, ultimately making EVs more accessible to a broader audience.

Beyond EVs, Monumo’s ‘Anser’ engine can be applied to any complex engineering problem, which means the sustainability benefits are far-reaching outside of the electric vehicle industry. Monumo’s technology has the potential to address sustainability challenges across verticals, including energy, generation, industrial products, heating, refrigeration, and robotics.
