I, Dr. Alex Krajete, am a highly-experienced academic and cleantech entrepreneur with 19 published papers, 197 citations, and 25 conference presentations in the field of environmental protection. My journey began with my academic thesis on biological methane production, using it as a model platform for studying gas bioprocesses. This research laid the foundation for my career, culminating in the establishment of Krajete GmbH in 2011.
Krajete was created in direct response to the challenges posed by harmful emissions, particularly NOx (nitrogen oxides). While media attention often focuses on CO₂, NOx emissions are equally significant contributors to environmental and health issues. Our team of five is committed to addressing these challenges through biomethanation and gas purification technologies.
Inspired by nature, our gas purification technology uses zeolites. These microporous crystalline aluminosilicate materials are known for their high surface area, thermal stability and selective adsorption properties. These attributes make them ideal for capturing NOx emissions.
Our process consists of two key stages: adsorption, where NOx emissions are captured using zeolites, significantly reducing air pollution, followed by desorption and conversion, where the captured NOx is released and transformed into valuable by-products. This regenerative NOx removal process converts harmful emissions into valuable materials such as nitric acid, which can be used in fertilisers.
For example, when integrated into the bypass mode of a vehicle, our technology can reduce NOx emissions by up to 98 per cent, with output levels as low as 1 ppm. This process reduces pollution while simultaneously supporting the fertiliser industry by providing an alternative to the Haber-Bosch process, a high-energy, high-emission method responsible for 2 per cent of global CO₂ emissions. By replacing it with a more sustainable solution, we contribute to reducing industrial greenhouse gas emissions and water pollution.
Our technology is already being deployed in various industrial applications including oil extraction, metal ore mining, power generation and chemical manufacturing. We are trusted by industry leaders such as Audi, SKYDIAMOND, BHP, TransitionHERO and EEW who recognise the importance of sustainable emissions treatment. Notably, the world’s largest copper mine has implemented our zeolite-based technology, setting a precedent for other major corporations to follow.
While our focus is on reducing industrial emissions, our broader mission is to raise awareness about air quality and environmental responsibility and we are actively engaged in improving environmental education in our schools. Many people believe sustainability is only about reducing CO2 but air pollution and NOx emissions are equally critical issues.
We must shift our perspective – we are not separate from nature; we are a part of it. Through innovation, education and responsible action we can move toward a truly sustainable and circular economy.
