How To Get a Covid-19 Travel Test

Even as Covid-19 restrictions have well and truly eased in the UK, the pandemic still impacts our lives in ways we’d have never imagined two years ago. Travelling is back on the cards, but it looks a little different to pre-pandemic trips.

Currently, if you want to travel abroad, it’s recommended that you check foreign travel advice for the country you’re hoping to visit. This advice will tell you if the country will allow visitors from the UK, if you’ll need to show proof of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test, and if you will need to quarantine on arrival.

What is a Covid-19 Travel Test?

A Covid-19 travel test is proof that you do not currently have Covid-19. Some countries require you to prove that you do not have Covid with different types of travel tests. There’s various types of Covid-19 travel test that you should be aware of, as different countries require different ones. Make sure you check – and double check – which type of test you need before you travel.

Fit to Fly Departure Test

A fit to fly test shows that you do not have Covid-19 whilst you’re flying to your destination. These types of tests are available as either a rapid lateral flow test, or a PCR test. Fit to fly tests need to be completed within a certain amount of time before your light departs, so make sure to check with your airline what you need to do.

These tests will come with options to click and collect, or have the tests done in person at a testing site. You’ll receive a fit to fly certificate with your negative test result. It’s important to remember that if you don’t receive your result in time, you won’t be able to fly – make sure to leave enough time for your results to come in.

Day 2 Test for Returning to England

It’s likely that you will have to complete a day 2 test when you return to England if you are not fully vaccinated against Covid-19. This is available as either a lateral flow test or a PCR test, and needs to be completed on or before day 2 – the day you land is counted as day zero. You should stay at home and avoid contact with other people if you receive a positive test.

Day 2 tests include a passenger locator form reference number which should be included in the form you fill in. They also include a certificate proving your negative result, providing you do not have Covid-19 at the time of testing.
