Interview with Harry Bliss, Co-Founder at Mental Wellbeing Platform: Champion Health

I founded Champion Health to help businesses improve the health and wellbeing of their staff through proactive health assessments. These assessments give organisations the data they need to implement targeted wellbeing strategies and provide employees with insight into their own health.

Our solution focuses on all aspects of workplace health and wellbeing, from mental health to physical health. Plus, our platform is developed by world-leading academics, GPs and technology professionals.

When we begin a relationship with a new business, we work closely with them every step of the way, to assess their employee health, identify the issues that matter and provide actionable solutions.

Workers complete an online health assessment that looks at mental health, muscular-skeletal health, lifestyle health and more. The employees then receive a personalised health report, while the organisation gets an anonymised report that they can utilise to focus wellbeing strategy.

How did you come up with the idea for the company?

After working for one of the UK’s largest corporate healthcare providers, I felt underwhelmed with their product and cost.

I realised that it could all be delivered digitally, eliminating cost and time as barriers for companies in the process.

On top of that, I lost a friend to suicide in 2018 following a two-week bout of workplace stress. It really shook me; he’d been mentoring me and he had no history of mental ill health. He had a wife, two children and an extremely successful career – his life was perfect on the surface.

After this tragedy, we set out on a mission to change and save lives. All of our solutions have been designed with this in mind.

How has the need for the company evolved during the pandemic?

I think it’s clear there were problems with mental health in the workplace even before COVID-19. However, the pandemic has really highlighted these challenges and galvanised many businesses to invest in their employee’s wellbeing.

We’ve seen a surge in enquiries since the first lockdown as businesses look to support their staff digitally while they work from home. Our solutions are administered remotely, so it’s well-suited to launch during prolonged periods of remote working.

Since March last year, we’ve seen 7,000 new individual registrations and over 400 business sign-ups – that’s about a six-fold increase on the start of 2020.

In April 2020 we even made our online mental health training free in response to the increase in enquiries and the impact lockdown was having on people’s wellbeing.

But there’s still a lot more to do. Far too many businesses see employee wellbeing as a tick box exercise. We know that those that take it seriously have a competitive advantage, and it’s the right thing to do.

What can we hope to see from Champion Health in the future?

This year, our vision is to become ‘the Netflix of wellbeing’ as we launch our improved digital health solution. We’re improving on our current platform to give users more resources to boost their wellbeing, alongside providing more insight to businesses.

We’ll also be launching our platform on mobile alongside desktop, making it more accessible to employees and allowing them to track their wellbeing on a daily basis.
