Liva Healthcare is a leading provider of scalable digital health coaching in Europe. Our behavioural change programmes help people with obesity, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases lead healthier lives, and has been proven to drive substantial clinical outcomes.
We are headquartered in Copenhagen and London, delivering industry-leading coaching programmes through an advanced app. Users get access to a real human health coach, designing a personalised lifestyle change programme for them based on their individual needs.
After a live video kick-off, users receive ongoing tailormade guidance, support and empathy from their personal coach through videos and texts in the app. Users can track their progress real-time and engage with a support group of peers to keep them motivated. The goal of the intervention is to help people prevent, manage or reverse chronic conditions through long-lasting lifestyle and behaviour changes.
How did you come up with the idea for the company?
I co-founded Liva with our Medical Director Carl Brandt and Chief Product Officer Kristoffer From. We’ve been in the digital healthcare sector for 23 years, and were front runners in the early days of the internet when co-founding NetDoctor.com back in 1998.
Fast-forward to 2015, based on what we had learned, we saw an opportunity to bring together the power of real, human health coaching through a scalable tech platform.
We believe in stronger bonds between healthcare professionals and patients through digital solutions. All patients respond to different approaches so we wanted to go beyond one-size-fits-all programmes or avatar coaches. The Liva app brings together personal coaching, group-based mentoring, individual and tailormade programmes, goal tracking, self-monitoring and evidence-based curriculums to support people at risk of, or living with, chronic conditions. Liva members get a personalised lifestyle change programme based on their individual needs.

What advice would you give to other aspiring entrepreneurs?
Do one thing and one thing only. If you have doubts about your vision or mission, don’t do it – you will only succeed if you believe enough in your idea. Stay focused on your original mission. Work like crazy but remember to have fun too.
What can we hope to see from Liva in the future?
You can expect to see more industry collaboration to help us solve more problems. For example, we’re already working with a number of life science companies. We’ve recently become part of a consortium of EU bodies, led by Amgen, to make cardiac rehabilitation accessible to more patients in the immediate aftermath of a heart attack.
We also want to extend our reach to make sure we have the biggest possible impact on society. In June, we announced our expansion to the German market to help combat the country’s rise in type 2 diabetes and obesity, and this is set to be a major growth market for us.
Germany is our ninth market, with operations already in Britain, Australia, Ireland, Holland, Belgium, Spain, Denmark and Sweden. We are proud to be increasingly international helping even more patients improve their lives.
