Meet Scott Jones, Founder and CEO at UX Agency: Illustrate Digital.

Launched in 2013, Illustrate Digital is a specialist WordPress agency based in Cardiff but working across the UK. Our expert team offer a range of services including user research, UX design and WordPress Development, to a global client base.

On top of this, we regularly share industry-leading insights and tools with the tech community.

How did you come up with the idea for the company and what makes it unique?

I was working in-house for a charity in the UK, we used Drupal and a couple of agencies for our website, and as many others may have found – the combination delivered a terrible experience.

Not being able to publish our own content easily, all the while being at the mercy of slow agencies that didn’t care about our marketing needs. I wanted to create something entirely different that could answer the call of enterprise and scaling brands.

Most agencies can build WordPress websites, but not many can handle the demands of an enterprise business when it comes to flexibility, security and scalability, so this is where I put all of my focus.

Our designs aren’t built on aesthetics, they’re focused on engagement with users and customers. If it doesn’t drive traffic through funnels, convert leads, or help people find the information they need then it doesn’t work.

How has the company evolved over the last couple of years?

Although Illustrate was originally founded as a WordPress development company, we’ve really leaned in to the benefits of good user experience. In the last couple of years, we rewrote the rulebook on good UX and have also added user research as a string to our bow.

User research allows us to learn as much as possible about a website’s audience, what they need, how they expect to interact and allows us to build experiences that are truly designed with the user in mind.

What can we hope to see from Illustrate Digital in the future?

The Illustrate team is currently working on some very unique tech for WordPress, introducing features and functionality for our client base that they won’t be able to get elsewhere, which we’re all very excited about.

On top of this we’re also building up our research database, to enable everyone who works with us to learn from the typical behaviours and expectations of website users.

Lastly, it’s hard not to recognise that workplace culture is incredibly important in the industry right now, and I’m really proud of the ethos we have here at Illustrate Digital, but it’s something we always want to maintain and build on.

We want to be one of the most well-respected digital agencies to work with/for anywhere in the world, and so everything from benefits to social events to investment in innovation are all top of my agenda in the coming months and years.
