Meet Tim Streather, MD at Birmingham Workplace Technology Provider: Spica

Spica was created in 2014, bootstrapped-funded and originally an IoT software provider. We’ve gone through a number of evolutions since, becoming a robust workplace experience platform and app provider. Following our recent acquisition by Scandinavian BMS integration specialist, Nordomatic, we now operate as its smart cloud division.

Within this division, we have cloud-based software for workplace experience, HVAC energy monitoring and optimisation and remote BMS management.

Whilst we are headquartered in sunny Birmingham, UK, we have a global team working remotely across the UK, as well as Canada, Spain, Sweden and even Bali, Indonesia. Through hard work, innovation and a sprinkling of luck, we’ve seen tremendous growth and our SaaS products are now used across 16 countries.

Oh, and our name? We are named after the brightest star in the Virgo constellation!

How did you come up with the idea for the company?

Throughout the history of Spica, we’ve developed technologically innovative products for practical, immediate use. Our first solution, and the driving force behind the creation of the company, was Healthy Water; our co-founder Paul Collins experienced an outdated, manual process for Legionalla testing within water systems.

Spica provided a digital software solution that improved both safety and efficiency in testing for Legionalla, and the rest is history.

How has the company evolved over the last couple of years?

Comprehensively! One of our proudest accomplishments as a company is creating sustainable growth within our deployments around the world, having broken into North America and APAC, as well as expanding and securing our place in the European market.

We’re continually evolving and adapting our solutions to meet the demands of the market for workplace experience software; everyone is aware that Covid has radically altered the workplace experience, but it is far from the only factor that has driven and will continue to drive change.

What can we hope to see from Spica in the future?

Spica is now firmly embedded within the workplace experience market, and we are well-placed to innovate and respond to the inevitable future changes. We are already in a market which is undergoing rapid change, and to that end what marks us out is that we really listen to clients – we develop services they need, based on real world demand rather than predictions.

We’re not planning to sit still anytime soon – keep an eyes out for further advancements amongst our suite of platforms, apps and cloud-based tools.
