Google, a pioneer in technological innovation, is embarking on its latest mission to combat the escalating challenge of disinformation facilitated by artificial intelligence (AI).
DeepMind, Google’s AI subsidiary, has introduced SynthID, a revolutionary digital watermarking technology designed to identify images produced by AI. The motive behind this advancement is to help in the fight against misinformation by enabling the distinction between genuine and AI-generated images.
The Subtle Power of SynthID
SynthID, developed by DeepMind, looks for the subtle manipulation of individual pixels within images. This modification makes the watermarks imperceptible to the human eye, but is detectable by computer algorithms. By implementing this cutting-edge approach, Google aims to enhance its capacity to detect and verify images, even in the face of extreme manipulation attempts.
The popularity of AI image generators has brought about a transformative shift in content creation. Notably, tools such as Midjourney, boasting over 14.5 million users, showcase the mainstream integration of AI in image creation. These platforms empower users to effortlessly generate images using simple text instructions, giving rise to concerns around copyright and ownership in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
SynthID’s Scope and Limitations
While Google has ventured into the realm of AI-generated content with its own image generator named Imagen, SynthID’s watermarking system will be exclusive to images generated using this particular tool. The challenge in watermarking AI-generated images lies in their susceptibility to manipulation. Conventional watermarks, such as logos or text, prove inadequate for this purpose, as they can be easily altered or removed.
SynthID introduces a new solution in the form of invisible watermarks that remain virtually undetectable to the human eye. This invisible watermarking approach empowers users to swiftly verify the authenticity of an image through specialised software.
Pushmeet Kohli, head of research at DeepMind, told the BBC its system modifies images so subtly “that to you and me, to a human, it does not change”.
Unlike hashing, he said even after the image is subsequently cropped or edited, the firm’s software can still identify the presence of the watermark.
“You can change the colour, you can change the contrast, you can even resize it… [and DeepMind] will still be able to see that it is AI-generated,” he said.

This transcends static images, as Meta’s unreleased video generator, Make-A-Video, also integrates watermarks to address the transparency demands accompanying AI-generated video content. Notably, China’s regulatory stance took a bold step by imposing a ban on AI-generated images without watermarks, highlighting the global importance of this emerging practice.
