OpenAI has rolled out GPT-4.5 as the latest addition to its popular suite of language models. This new release is much bigger in size compared to GPT-4o, which became popular for accurate text outputs. GPT-4.5 is billed as the largest and most knowledgeable model the company has produced so far.
In a blog post, they said, “We’re releasing a research preview of OpenAI GPT‑4.5, our largest and most knowledgeable model yet. Building on GPT‑4o, GPT‑4.5 scales pre-training further and is designed to be more general-purpose than our powerful STEM-focused reasoning models.
“We trained it using new supervision techniques combined with traditional methods like supervised fine-tuning (SFT) and reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), similar to those used for GPT‑4o. We conducted extensive safety evaluations prior to deployment and did not find any significant increase in safety risk compared to existing models.”
They describe it as a flexible tool suited for daily writing tasks, programming chores, and practical problem solving.
OpenAI wants to gather feedback from real world use during this research preview phase. Creators of GPT-4.5 maintain that it performs more consistently in everyday exchanges, and that it avoids imaginary details more often than earlier models. This is important for anyone who needs a language model they can trust with day-to-day tasks.

Is There A Purpose Behind This Release?
The team at OpenAI has been managing two branches of language technology: the GPT series, and the o1 and o3 group. GPT-4.5 continues the classic GPT lineage that started with the earliest text generators.
Developers describe GPT-4.5 as more fluent in relaxed conversation. Its size means it can detect cues in text, such as emotional hints and feelings behind words. This is useful for users who want a system that can pick up on context without detailed instructions.
GPT-4.5 doesn’t attempt logical breakdowns of complicated problems the way the o1 or o3 products do. Instead, it goes for smooth, immediate responses that touch on general topics.
Who Can Access It Right Now?
People who pay for ChatGPT Pro at $200 a month can start using GPT-4.5 immediately. According to OpenAI, users on other plans will see the upgrade in the coming weeks. The company’s leader, Sam Altman, has explained that they want to avoid sudden server overloads before scaling up.
GPT-4.5 also has a few new tricks, such as the ability to fetch live information through search and work with file and image uploads. It includes a canvas feature for writing or coding in a more visual environment, though it doesn’t have a voice interface at this time. Video and screen sharing are not active as well.
Altman has said that the model’s main charm lies in how natural it feels. He warned that GPT-4.5 isn’t designed to pass advanced academic tests or reason out tough calculations, so it might not compete with specialised products. Still, he seems excited about this style of conversation partner.
OpenAI has hinted that GPT-5 will have a large language model with reasoning. That could transform the entire field once it arrives. Sam Altman has said GPT-4.5 may be the last in the traditional GPT family before something new takes over.
