Is Trump Creating An AI-Powered Search Engine?

Trump Media and Technology Group has started public beta testing for a new AI-powered search feature on Truth Social. The company introduced Truth Search AI this week, describing it as a way to increase the amount of information users can get while using the platform.

The search tool is powered by Perplexity, a company known for building software that answers user questions with direct replies and sources. Dmitry Shevelenko from Perplexity said the tool aims to support curiosity and give users straightforward responses with citations so they can check or read further.

Right now, the AI search tool only works on the web version of Truth Social. Tests for iOS and Android apps are expected to begin soon. Trump Media’s chief executive Devin Nunes said the team would review how users interact with the tool before deciding how to improve it or add more features.

Why Is This Important?

The announcement puts Truth Social in the group of social platforms now using AI as part of their service. Elon Musk introduced Grok, an AI chatbot on X, in 2023. Meta added Meta AI across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp in 2024. Reddit also added an AI-powered search function.

Truth Search AI works using Perplexity’s Sonar API, according to a spokesperson from the company. The financial or technical details of the agreement have not been made public.

Trump Media said it wants the tool to make the Truth Social experience better and provide more useful answers to user questions.

How Does This Connect To Trump’s Policies?

AI has been one of Donald Trump’s talking points since his first term. Earlier this year, President Trump signed an executive order to take away what he described as blocks to American leadership in AI. In July, the White House published an AI action plan intended to help the US win the global AI race.

Devin Nunes, who now leads Trump Media after serving as a congressman in California, said Truth Search AI forms part of wider changes being made to Truth Social. According to him, the search function will be refined and improved after getting feedback from users during the beta stage.

Nunes also said the AI tool plays into what he called the “Patriot Economy,” a term used by some conservatives to describe a group of companies and platforms that reflect right-leaning values.

What Does The New AI Search Actually Do?

Truth Search AI is designed to give direct answers to questions, much like a conversation. Instead of just pulling up links, it summarises the best answer from different sources and shows citations so users can verify the information.

Perplexity, the company behind the technology, said the tool is meant to make searching easier and more trustworthy. It has already launched similar tools elsewhere, but the Truth Social version appears to be specific to that platform’s users.

Trump Media hopes the tool will increase user engagement as it builds out other features including streaming and financial services.

Truth Social already has its own video platform called Truth+ and a financial brand called Truth.Fi. The company seems to be building an ecosystem of products under the “Truth” name.
