Virgin Media O2 Launches Support Project For Small Businesses

Virgin Media O2 and Salford Council are partnering to make digital access easier for local residents through the Big Device Giveaway. This project distributed 150 devices, each equipped with O2 SIM cards containing enough data to keep users connected to online services.

The devices were handed out during 5 events where residents also had the chance to attend workshops. Volunteers from Virgin Media O2 were there to guide people through using their new devices and explain low-cost broadband options for those on limited incomes. In total, 625 devices were distributed, benefiting over 1,000 residents, many of whom had struggled to get online before.

Free data, texts, and calls were made available through the National Databank, giving residents 25GB of data each month, which equates to around 275 hours of internet usage. This has helped people in the community access job opportunities, education, healthcare, and more.

What Impact Has This Had On The People Of Salford?

For many, the Big Device Giveaway has opened up new opportunities. Jason, a local resident who received a tablet and SIM card, said the new technology has helped him apply for jobs and sign up for a management course. Without these tools, he had found it difficult to create CVs or attend online job fairs.

Families in Salford have found the devices helpful in many aspects of daily life. They are now able to attend virtual doctor’s appointments, apply for government benefits, and keep in touch with friends and family. For people who had previously been disconnected from the digital world, this project has given them the tools to engage more fully with modern life.

On top of the devices, over 160 residents have signed up for digital skills sessions, eager to learn how to get the most out of their new technology. This has helped make sure that the project is not just about handing out devices but also about building confidence in using them.

Affordable broadband and mobile data plans help businesses stay connected, while clean energy solutions reduce long-term operational costs.
