The number of people playing games online is on the rise. Studies predict that by the end of 2027, nearly every single gamer in the UK (and millions of them) will be spending their time gaming online somehow.
This may mean finding games that are more sociable and having fun with their friends, or epic competitive games where people can blast their enemies or beat them in races. Others may just want to play online on their favourite websites.
VR Tech
VR Tech has to be right on the top of the list. Gaming has always been about immersing ourselves in different worlds. Even online games have a bit of that immersion, there is nothing in the gaming industry that will make you feel quite as immersed as VR tech.
Virtual Reality, or VR for short, involves putting on a headset which shows you a 360-degree world you can walk (or run) through. VR games will let you interact with the environment.
There aren’t that many VR games that are online at the moment. It is still a fairly niche technology, although it is now more popular than ever. VR has changed the online gaming industry by allowing us to dive into immersive worlds with our friends and interact with people in new and completely different ways.
As we said, this is still a niche piece of tech in the online gaming world but when VR tech takes hold, we will likely see huge leaps forward in online gaming options.
Live Dealer Gaming
When most people think of online games, they think of your typical console or PC game. However, there are other online games too.
Perhaps the most popular are casino games, mainly because gambling is a pastime of many, and online access makes gambling a lot easier than ever before, with thousands of games available through casinos found at places like Casino Detective as well as various others. One very specific tech improvement to consider however, is live dealer gambling.
Online casino games have been kicking around in some form for a long time. However, live dealer gambling is more recent. Improvements to online gaming tech means that live video can now be streamed to players. Live dealer gambling is all about trying to replicate the real-life casino experience from the comfort of your own home.
Many gamblers now prefer gambling with live dealers, as not only is it more realistic, but it is so much more sociable (people tend to game online for the social effects). It hasn’t happened yet, but we can’t wait for companies to combine VR tech with live dealer games. It’ll really feel like we are walking around a real casino. Some tech hurdles will need to be cleared first, though.
Mobile Gaming Options
Although this isn’t that much of a recent change in the online gaming industry, it did completely shake up how everything works.
Nowadays, nearly everybody has a device suited for gambling online in their pocket. You can now dive into game experiences no matter where you are. This has influenced the type of online games that have been developed, particularly those designed for mobile devices.
Online gaming is not just for ‘hardcore players’ anymore. There are more casual experiences out there. Ones that everybody can engage in.
Take games like Roblox, for example. While some hardcore gaming experiences are built on the platform, much of what you find in Roblox is a simple experience, often designed with children in mind. This is part of the reason why the number of online game players is on the rise. There is now an online game for everybody and people can access these games when they want.
There is also a change developing in the ways in which people play online games. Gone are the days when you’d need to knuckle down to a multi-hour session to get anything from your games. Many games are now designed for shorter, punchier experiences; think of getting through a quick session or game in a matter of minutes, which is perfect for the person on the go.
Blockchain
While some people are not particularly fascinated with the idea of blockchain in gaming, there is no denying the tech is having an impact.
Blockchain-based games often allow you to earn in-game assets you can sell for real money. They’ve probably not quite had the impact that many game developers were hoping for, but they do attract players. It is a relatively new way to play and it’ll be interesting to see how blockchain gaming expands.
However, an area where blockchain is having a positive impact is allowing people to deposit cash into the games they play the most with cryptocurrencies. Most online casinos now allow crypto.
Cloud Gaming
Finally, cloud gaming which ties into the whole mobile gaming aspect is important to consider. Cloud gaming is shaking up the types of games that we can play with our mobile devices. You don’t need quality hardware to run the games with cloud gaming. Instead, that’s all handled by external servers, and you just interact with a video stream of the game (and a good video stream, at that).
Many people are predicting cloud gaming to be the next big thing in the online gaming space, and companies like Microsoft, with their Xbox brand, are going all-in on making sure they are on the ground floor, making top-quality online games available to as many people as possible.
Tech advancements are having a significant impact on the online gaming industry. However, these tech advancements all boil down to the same thing; they are making more games available to the players.
