Europe’s online gambling market is shifting faster than ever, and mobile is winning. According to a new report from CasinoGrounds, mobile devices already account for around 58% of online gambling revenue, with that figure expected to climb to nearly 67% by 2029.

If the forecast holds, mobile will soon be the default way Europeans gamble online.

Younger Players Are Leading the Charge

The shift is particularly pronounced among younger adults. UK Gambling Commission data cited in the report shows that 76% of online gamblers aged 18-24 use smartphones, compared with only 14% of those over 65. For operators, this generational split is shaping everything from UX design to product strategy.

Nordic Markets at the Front – Germany Still Far Behind

CasinoGrounds’ analysis highlights the Nordics as Europe’s most digitally advanced gambling markets:

  • Sweden: ~68% of all gambling now happens online
  • Finland: ~68%
  • Denmark: ~68%, with mobile accounting for 70% of betting and 63% of online-casino GGR

Southern Europe is accelerating too – Spain saw +15.14% YoY online GGR growth in Q1 2024.

Germany, however, continues to trail. With online gambling at only ~22.6% of total market share, strict rules on spin speeds, stake limits, and deposit caps continue to slow digital adoption.

Record Uptake of Safer-Gambling Tools

One of the strongest indicators of market maturity is the rapid rise of responsible-gambling technology. Recent EGBA data shows:

  • 60% of players used a safer-gambling tool in 2023
  • 65% did so in 2024 — the highest level ever recorded
  • Uptake is expected to approach 70% in the near future

AI-driven risk detection and real-time intervention tools are becoming standard across major operators.

5G, Payments and New Tech Push Mobile Even Further

The report links mobile’s growth to several key drivers:

85% 5G population coverage in Europe, widespread use of Apple Pay/PayPal/Skrill on mobile, improved live-dealer performance, and early VR/AI experiments such as PokerStars’ Vegas Infinite.

By 2030, nearly 80% of mobile connections in Europe are expected to run on 5G, enabling richer mobile casino experiences.

A Clear Direction for Europe’s Operators

The report concludes that operators who build mobile-first products, strengthen responsible-gaming frameworks, and adapt early to regulatory shifts will be best positioned for long-term growth.

The report notes that “by 2029, nearly seven in ten euros wagered online in Europe will be on mobile.”
