With retail responsible for 25% of global carbon emissions and the fashion sector on track to generate 2.1 billion metric tons of carbon emissions in 2030, Vaayu’s mission is to reduce one gigaton of carbon emissions by 2030. In 2023, Vaayu delivered the largest-ever primary dataset on the climate impact of shopping second-hand fashion online and at scale with Vinted, by collecting real-time tracking information from over half a billion transactions and insights from 350,000 Vinted users. Vaayu also recognizes that reducing emissions is a shared responsibility with the consumer and, as part of an ongoing collaborative partnership with Klarna, is providing its 150 million shoppers with automatically calculated carbon footprints for over 122 million fashion products by pulling product-level emissions data via Vaayu’s API.
Vaayu is one of the first to market solutions offering a deeper understanding of climate impact — moving beyond carbon and similar greenhouse gas emissions to calculate further impact factors including water consumption, freshwater ecotoxicity, freshwater eutrophication, marine eutrophication and non-renewable energy consumption. This offers brands a much greater insight into their Scope 3 impact — the Scope which is responsible for up to 90% of a brand’s impact — and understanding and reporting on these factors is preferred by global leading standards.
