Electric Air Taxis Could Be The Future Of Travel, But Who Will Get A Seat First?

Electric aircrafts carrying passengers across cities sounds like something straight out of “Back To the Future,” but tech companies are actively trying to turn eVTOL into a real transport option.

Developing the aircraft is one challenge, but creating a system that allows people to use them presents an entirely different set of challenges. Where will they take off? Which cities have the infrastructure to support them? Who can actually afford a seat? And which countries are in the best position to introduce them first?

The first passengers using air taxis might not necessarily be the people who need better transport the most. They could simply be the people living in cities that already have the money, infrastructure and regulations to support them.

 

Getting An Air Taxi Off The Ground Is Just The Start

 

TechCrunch’s recent coverage of electric aviation highlights how developers are looking for ways to bring these aircraft into commercial use sooner. But getting an air taxi into the sky doesn’t suddenly make it ready to carry passengers around a city.

Someone still needs to figure out where the passengers will be able to get on and off, how the aircraft will be charged between flights and where they will be maintained. And unlike a normal car journey, an air taxi needs to fit in alongside existing air traffic.

Then there’s the less exciting, but arguably more important, paperwork. Regulators still need to approve the aircraft and services built around them before passengers can start booking flights.

Basically, building the aircraft is the flashy part; building everything around it is where things get complicated.

 

 

Where Could Air Taxis Work?

 

It might be tempting to assume the world’s wealthiest countries will automatically be the first to adopt air taxis,but money isn’t the only thing that matters.

Cities looking to introduce the technology will also need reliable infrastructure, places for vertiports, regulators willing to approve the technology and enough demand to make the service worthwhile. It’s not simply about having deep pockets. A city could have plenty of potential passengers and still struggle to get an air taxi off the ground.

For cities dealing with unreliable electricity, limited infrastructure or lengthy planning processes, introducing these air taxis could be a much bigger challenge. Having enough people who want to use the service doesn’t necessarily mean a city can support it.

 

Who Gets To Use Them First?

 

This is where things get interesting. Air taxis are unlikely to become the new way everyone gets to work. Early services could be aimed at wealthier passengers who are willing to pay more to avoid traffic or businesses looking for faster ways to travel between airports and major commercial areas.

Over time, the technology could become more accessible if aircraft production increases and operating costs fall. Governments could also eventually look at using air taxis as part of public transport, particularly in areas where existing transport links are limited.

But there’s a big difference between eventually becoming affordable and being affordable when the technology first arrives. The first people taking these flights could be those who value saving time enough to pay a premium for it.

 

What Would Make Air Taxis Affordable?

 

Right now, jumping into an air taxi to avoid traffic sounds much more like a premium service than an everyday commute. But that doesn’t mean it will stay that way.

As more companies enter the market and production increases, the cost of operating these services could eventually come down. The same could happen with charging and other infrastructure as more cities invest in urban mobility.

There’s also the question of how people would actually use them. If air taxis remain focused on airport transfers and business travel, they could stay expensive because customers are paying for speed and convenience. If cities eventually treat them as another part of public transport, the economics could look very different.

For now, the question isn’t whether people will want to use them. It’s whether enough people will be able to afford them.
