According to Statista, the global AI market is expected to be worth $826 billion by 2030, so it’s no wonder so many companies are rushing to have a piece of the action. Whilst the notion of AI isn’t new, entrepreneurs are exploring how we can apply it to different areas. Whether it’s in healthcare, robotics, customer service, writing or more.

Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of DeepMind, Google’s AI-led research lab. One of his biggest achievements was the development of AlphaGo, an AI programme that defeated a world champion in the Chinese game Go. This was one of the first times that the potential of AI was demonstrated in such a mainstream way.

The development of AlphaGo was particularly notable as Hassabis started his career as a video game AI programmer and designer. Today, his work is helping push forward areas of healthcare, gaming and ethics, making him a key figure in the UK AI space.

Max Lytvyn is a co-founder of Grammarly, an AI-powered writing assistant. Before Grammarly, Lytvyn co-created MyDropBox, a programme designed to help detect plagiarism.

Under his leadership, Grammarly has grown into a household name. Having started as a simple grammar checker, it is now a complicated AI that is used by millions worldwide.

 

Larry Kim – Customers.ai

Larry Kim is the founder and CEO of Customers.ai, a company that uses AI to help sales and marketing teams learn more about their customers.

Kim, who also founded customer engagement AI WordStream, has led the way in discovering how AI and marketing can go hand in hand.

Another big name in the UK AI industry, Shane Legg is the co-founder and Chief AGI Scientist at DeepMind

His work has become particularly well known for developing ‘artificial general intelligence’ – a term used to describe an AI that can work and react to cognitive tasks in the same way as humans. He has also been a big voice in the debate around the risks and ethics of AI, warning about its danger to humanity.

Daphne Koller, co-founder of online education platform Coursera, is using AI for education.

After being a professor at Stanford University, Koller went on to found Coursera. The platform uses AI to provide students with personalised learning options, and gives them access to a vast number of online tech courses designed by world-renowned universities.

Niels Thone is the co-founder of Sprout.ai, a company that uses AI to help insurers deliver faster and more accurate claims decisions.

Under his leadership, Sprout AI has grown into a huge name in the insurance sector, showing how much AI can innovate traditional industries.

 

Wardah Inam – Overjet

Wardah Inam graduated top of her class at MIT and went on to found Overjet, an AI that is transforming the dental industry.

By using machine learning to analyse images, Overjet is able to help dentists treat their patients quickly and accurately. Not only that, the platform also provides information for patients, allowing them to understand their diagnosis and receive better care. Overjet is already being used worldwide and is a great example of how AI and healthcare can collide.

 

Jensen Huang – NVIDIA

NVIDIA is one of the biggest companies driving forward the world of AI. Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, has transformed the company into a global leader powering GPUs, robotics and autonomous vehicles.

Sam Altman – OpenAI

Sam Altman is probably one of the most famous names in AI. He is the CEO of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, DALL-E and Sora.

The company is changing the way that AI interacts with various media sources, allowing users to access information or generate text, images and videos more quickly. Whilst it has come up against some criticism for alleged copyright infringement, Altman has certainly been one of the key figures bringing AI into the mainstream.

 

Fei-Fei Li

Fei-Fei Li is an AI researcher, Sequoia Capital professor of computer science at Stanford and former board member of Twitter.

In 2017 she co-founded a nonprofit organisation called AI4ALL, whose aim was to make the AI industry more accessible and diverse.

She is well known for her work on ImageNet, a dataset that propelled computing research. As of recently, she has raised funds to start her own AI company that will aim to understand how the 3-dimensional physical world works.
