F1 Cars Are Getting Smaller, Smarter And Faster – Will Tech Eventually Become More Important Than The Driver?

McLaren is bringing another round of upgrades to Zandvoort this weekend, following the package that helped Lando Norris take his first win of 2026 at the Hungarian Grand Prix. More upgrades are now arriving in the Netherlands, showing how quickly an F1 car can change.

A new floor or aerodynamic update can suddenly turn a struggling car into a race contender. That makes it tempting to look at the machinery first when trying to work out why one driver is winning and another isn’t.

But where does the driver actually fit into all of that?

F1 has always been a combination of engineering and driving talent. The difference now is how much technology sits between the driver’s hands and the track. As the cars get smarter, smaller and more complicated, it’s fair to ask whether that balance could eventually shift too far towards the machine.

 

The 2026 Car Is Smaller, But Far From Simple

 

The 2026 cars were designed to be smaller and lighter, but that hasn’t made them simple. The new regulations bring a much larger electrical contribution from the power unit, active aerodynamics and more demanding energy management.

The MGU-K recovers energy under braking and converts it into electrical power, while the car’s aerodynamic configuration can change depending on what the driver is doing. That gives the driver another set of things to manage while already dealing with braking points, tyres, traffic and rivals.

Technology has changed what being an F1 driver requires. Drivers still need to carry speed through corners and brake later than the person beside them, but they also need to understand the car’s systems and make the right decisions quickly enough to use them properly.

Personally, I think that’s one of the many overlooked parts of modern F1. Watching a driver manage several systems while disappearing down a straight isn’t quite as dramatic as a last-second overtake, but it’s still part of the job. There are probably few other sports where doing your job well involves remembering a list of settings while travelling at more than 200mph.

 

 

Lando, Lewis And Max Make The Driver Argument Hard To Ignore

 

Lando Norris enters 2026 as the reigning World Champion after winning his first title in 2025, Lewis Hamilton arrives with seven World Championships, tied with Michael Schumacher for the record, while Max Verstappen is a four-time champion after dominating the sport from 2021 to 2024.

Norris’ championship came after McLaren developed into a title-winning team, showing how quickly a driver’s fortune can change when the machinery catches up with their ability. His first 2026 win in Hungary was another example of what happens when everything comes together, but the need for further upgrades also shows that even a reigning champion can’t simply carry an imperfect car to the front.

That doesn’t take away from Norris’s driving, it shows just how much the driver has to work with what they’re given, while the team keeps looking for extra gains that could make a difference.

Hamilton offers a different perspective. His move to Ferrari has put more attention on how much of a driver’s performance can be carried across when the machinery changes. A driver can bring experience, racecraft and an understanding of how to work with a car, but those qualities don’t guarantee the same results if the car behaves differently underneath them.

It’s a great reminder that being one of the best drivers on the grid doesn’t give you a magic button that suddenly fixes the car.

Verstappen shows the other side of the argument. His ability to extract performance from a car, particularly when it isn’t the fastest on the grid, makes it harder to separate driver skill from machinery. His performance shows that a driver can make a noticeable difference when the car isn’t perfect, but there’s still a limit to what an exceptional driver can achieve when the car simply doesn’t have the pace.

 

What If We Swapped The Driver?

 

The easiest way to test how much the driver matters would be to put everyone in the same car.

Imagine Norris in a Red Bull, Verstappen in a Ferrari and Hamilton in a McLaren. Give them identical setups, identical tyres and enough races to settle in, then see what happens.

Obviously, that isn’t happening anytime soon. And even if it did, it’s lights out and away we go straight into another argument about whose fault that was. (Probably George again).

F1 rarely gives us a clean comparison. Teammates can have different setups, strategies, tyre degradation and traffic. After all, upgrades don’t always arrive on both cars at exactly the same time either.

That’s why separating the driver from the car is almost impossible. A great driver can make a difference, but a great car can make an enormous difference too. The frustrating part, at least for anyone trying to settle the debate, is that F1 gives us very few situations where we can properly measure one without the other.

 

Technology Has Changed The Driver’s Job

 

Modern F1 technology hasn’t removed the driver from the equation;it’s changed the equation entirely.

More technology doesn’t mean less skill; it means drivers have more layers to work with while they’re already trying to find every last bit of performance from the car.

F1 probably isn’t at the point where the car matters more than the person driving it. But the cars are doing more alongside the driver, and that makes the balance harder to ignore. Thankfully, we still need someone to throw the car around at turn one at a ridiculous speed while keeping it on track. That tension between the driver and the car is what gives us something to look forward to on a Sunday afternoon, and honestly, F1 would be a lot less fun without it.
