Life Calling Founder John Mack To Represent USA With Tech-Inspired Art In The 2023 London Design Biennale

His acclaimed exhibition A Species Between Worlds will be displayed at the USA’s Pavilion during the month-long event

Author and artist John Mack has been selected to represent the USA in the 2023 London Design
Biennale which will take place at Somerset House 1-25 June.

His exhibition A Species Between Worlds: Our Nature, Our Screens, which explores the role of virtual universes in the future of humanity, will take centre-stage at the USA’s Pavilion during the month-long exhibition and thought-leadership event, which this year has the theme of ‘The Global Game: Remapping Collaborations.’

Since 2016, author and artist John Mack has committed himself to one of the most pressing conversations of our times: the digital takeover of human consciousness.

Visitors to his installation at London Design Biennale will be immersed in two different worlds, where real-world images will be juxtaposed with a custom-augmented reality app, exploring who we are in relation to our environment and showing humanity’s widening divorce from the intricate depths of our true nature.

In A Species Between Worlds, Mack uses digital game design as a means to highlight mankind’s growing disconnection from nature. In order to capture the visual landscape and its digital counterparts, Mack travelled extensively around the United States of America, from Maine to Hawaii, photographing over 45 US National Parks.

A Species Between Worlds recently enjoyed a record-breaking run in New York, where more than 65 of John Mack’s artworks were featured in a 16,000 sq ft exhibition space, all manipulated and combined with artificial landscapes from the Pokémon Go app.

London Design Biennale is a global showcase of design and design-thinking, dedicated to innovation, contemporary creativity and research. Over 40 exhibitors from around the world will showcase world leading design, confronting global challenges and inspiring audiences with thought-provoking and interactive installations.

Taking over the entirety of Somerset House, participants from across the globe will be invited to imagine and enact new forms of international cooperation —including with each other—through the medium of design.

John Mack commented: “I’m delighted to be able to bring my exhibition A Species Between Worlds to London Design Biennale in June and it’s a real accolade to be chosen to represent the US in this international cultural event.

“The digital takeover of human consciousness is one of the major issues of our time and this installation will explore what it means to be human in this increasingly digital world.”
