About Simon Thomas
Simon is CEO of Paragraf, a company he co-founded in 2018. With a diverse background in physics, engineering and materials science, he spent nearly 20 years in the fields of compound semiconductor materials, devices, and applications. Working in multiple scientific and technology disciplines led to the innovation of a novel manufacturing technique for graphene fabrication and subsequently Paragraf.
Simon has successfully navigated Paragraf through the early phases of establishment and growth and is now leading the company through the challenges of business scaling. So far Simon has raised over $85m in capital for the business, grown the company to 100 people and ensured achievement of all technology, product, and company milestones along the way.
Simon is passionate about developing technologies that can solve todays enduring challenges and beneficially affect global society. He believes that new materials hold the key to transformational products that will deliver a brighter more sustainable future.
Paragraf harnesses graphene’s unique properties to create the next generation of sensors.
It is the first company to mass produce graphene-based Hall effect sensors that measure magnetic fields using less power, with greater sensitivity than conventional Hall sensors. Paragraf sensors have unique advantages for industrial automation and manufacturing, automotive and transportation, consumer electronics, research, computing and healthcare applications.
The company’s patented production techniques provide a contamination-free, one-atom-thick layer of graphene directly on a standard semiconductor substrate. The team is also developing biosensors that will deliver high sensitivity, point-of-care diagnostic tests and working on technologies to extend Moore’s Law.
Paragraf’s story began in 2015, when CEO Simon Thomas was part of a team of research scientists at the University of Cambridge working with graphene deposition. The Paragraf HQ and first manufacturing plant opened near Cambridge in 2018. A second plant will open soon.
